Anyone trying to lose weight right before surgery?
I had my appt with my surgeon back in March and I weight 265. After months of going around with my insurance company, I was finally approved and have a surgery date of Sept 14th. Only problem is, I gained 10 lbs When I got my pre-op paperwork in the mail, there was a note stating that if anyone gains weight before surgery they will be rescheduled I called the surgeon's office and she said I should at least try to get under 270. So, here I am trying to lose weight, and I keep wanting to eat everything because I won't be able to eat after my surgery. Bad bad girl, I know So, I have lost 3 lbs and have another 3 lbs to go.
Anyone else going through this?
Not yet, but my surgeon requires that his patients go on a liquid diet 10 days before surgery. I did the same thing as you - I was 227 at my appointment in March. But after fighting with my insurance for months, I too gained 10 lbs. I'll see the surgeon this week when they do my preop EGD and I won't be surprised if he tells me to start the liquid diet now instead of waiting 10 days before surgery. I'm sure that you won't have a problem losing the 3 lbs. Good luck - I'll be thinking of you!

I said the same thing when my surgeon asked me to lose 25 lbs.... 'If I could do that, why would I need the surgery?!' He had a good answer, he said 'This time you won't bounce back!' Also, that it's not to punish us (or to 'prove' that we can follow the program) but the first weight you lose reduces fat on your liver, which helps make the stomach more accessible during surgery. Made me feel better bout doing Slim Fast for 2 months! (which has worked for me, btw, always keeping in mind it's TEMPORARY!!! THAT I can do!!
"I was told definantly not worry about ever eating again."
I'm not sure what you mean by that?? You still have to eat after WLS, and you have to follow the rules! You're going to be doing nothing BUT worrying about what you eat & drink for the first several MONTHS.
With the RNY, you have VERY specific rules about how & when to eat and drink. Did anyone give you the pouch rules? Do you know that you can't drink with meals? Because of that, you have to time when you eat & drink to make sure you don't dehydrate. Did they tell you that you must get in 80g of protein a day? That's a lot when you have a 1.5 oz stomach.
There's a much more normal style of eating with the DS, but no matter what WLS you have, you have to pay more attention to food, especially protein intake.
I went through something similiar and luckily dropped the 15 pounds I needed to in a month. I made big pots of veggie soup and ate that along with yogurt, salads, fat free pudding and carnation instant breakfast. That along with walking a few times a week and not cheating at all was a miracle! My dropped the weight pretty quickly. Nothing was going to get in between me and my surgery.. not even myself!
Shannon,
My surgery was moved up from the 23rd to the 6th so i had to go the clear liquids and 60gms of protien a day immediatly i have lost 15lbs and havn't had to take my diabetes medicine all week, my sugar has been fine. what i keep in mind is that THIS time the weight won't be back. and that alone keeps me going. also on my ultra sound they said i had alot of fat on my liver...i don't want that getting in the way of my surgeon i figure he has a tough enough job. hang in there and keep in mind what the prize is. i have wanted to eat daily but my family is doing clear liquids and protien to for support they could all stand to loose a few pounds to. so hang in there attempt to make good choice. there is finally hope for us!

Hi Shannon,
I read your post and thought I wrote it!!!!! I gained ten pounds from the last time I had seen the surgeon and I am scheduled for the 12th (pending approval). I have been BATTLING not to eat what I want. I did manage to lose six pounds, but it has been REALLY TOUGH. All I want to do it eat everything!!! BUT, I keep reminding myself that if I do that, my surgery may have to be "Open" instead of "Laporascopic" and I DON'T want that to happen. But I do slip up here and there.
The killer is that my birthday is on the 12th. I want my carvel ice cream cake!!!!
Hugs,
Dawn
