So now that I am back on fitday I have found some interesting things. I had bought some Thomas English muffins. Wheat as recommended. They are great and have something like 6 grams of protein. Well it just so happens I had some generic english and I compared calories etc. Well they were the same, the wheat muffins had 1 gram of protein more. Now mind you I still will have the wheat muffin over the regular I just don't assume anymore that calories reflect the quality of the product. I guess my point is that sometimes we assume we are eating healthier than we really are. I was also having a yogurt in the morning with Kashi cereal mixed in, the yogurt wasn't staying with me long enough. I though adding the cereal would give it staying power. Well it did but the calories was well over 350. I was better off having milk in my cereal which makes me fuller longer. any one else have some "food" tips? donna

When I buy breads I look for the whole grain content. Altho the calories may be the same as the white food product, your body metabolizes grains far differently than white flour. Look at the difference in the fiber content as well, my understanding is that 3-4 grams of fiber per serving is good (totally helps with the pooping ). I've been using the glycemic index on southbeach.com to determine which veggies and grains are in the low - med glycemic catagory, sticking mostly to the low. The lower the glycemic index is the better your body metabolizes the carb. I no longer feel guilty about eating my veggies, whole grain breads and even sweet potatoes. It has made my "diet" easier to live with and boy these things can fill you up. Make sense?? Micha

I totally get it. That muffin had me filled up this morning like nothing else I have eaten lately. Love the sweet potato's they have replace my mashed potato weakness. Have you tried them french fried? I cut them like fry's us evoo on them just to lightly coat, add some spices depending on my mood. Cook at 350 for 20+ minutes ooooohh they are great. It also feeds that need to fries/chips.... I have the southbeach book I will have to reread it and look over those vegies... I love fruits and vegis so knowing the better choice will help. donna

dense donna here - I don't get it. I'm going to have to read this again Micha to see if it can make sense to me. I don't understand glycemic, but I know you've mentioned it before. Oh, and as we speak I have a couple of sweet potatoes cooking in the oven. But maybe I should look at the south beach diet book and see if I can make sense of it. love donna

I do know there is a big issue about carbs. Here is what i know. Michael Thurmond who if you dont know is the guy who does the six week body makeover and does all the physical training stuff for extreme makeover says carbs in moderation are good as long as they are natural carbs not processed carbs. Ie potatos rice whole wheat products, oatmeal ... we need these stay away from chips crackers too much bread ... These are my favorites and im dealing with them. You can also go to sixweekbodymakeover.com and take a little body typing quiz and figure out what body type you are his theory is that eveyone is different and different food combos effect us each differently. Its pretty interesting. Tammy O

I eat oatmeal every morning. I love the instant with flavors. I have my grandson hooked on it to. It not only feels me up. It taste good and is good for the heart. I never eat rice or bread. I do eat potatoes. Im trying to leave french fries alone. My grandsons eat alot of them. and I grab at them Besides that. I reall y eat pretty healthy. I do eat one Bananna a day. Because it gives me potastium. That I need. Have a good day Hugs Barb
