Protein Question
Okay this goes out to all you experts on this wonderful board...I need some help here! I have been using the same protein (unjury) for about a year now (it's the only one that I actually like and can tolerate) - Do our systems become ammune (maybe not the right word) to the same protein? For example I've heard that if you take the same medication for long periods of time it either doesn't work as well or stops working - your body just gets used to it...Can that happen with the protein? That was question #1!
Question #2 - are any of you just getting protein from food now and not using the powder or liquid protein? I am wondering if I am getting too much protein and maybe that's why my scale isn't moving????
This is way too complicated for me I'm relying on you guys for answers and help!! Thanx!!
hugsssss...Linda
(I hope I'm not overthinking things)
Hi Linda, as far as I know you do not become immune to protein. The only thing is you can become sick of it!! I am not getting enough protein from food so I supplement with 3 protein drinks a day. I just don't eat that much so I want to be safe on the amount.
The one thing about the protein powder that I think you might want to be careful about, or protein bars even more so, are the number of calories. I had a friend who's husband mixed his protein powder with LOTS of peanut butter and made like a peanut butter shake and started putting on weight!!
Hope this helops,
love

good morning miss donna
It's funny - I think I got bored with the protein shakes and found a way to use it outside of shakes...I have been putting a scoop of vanilla in my coffee in the morning and in the afternoon - I am going to change that today. I am always trying different ways to get the scale moving - so here is today's plan ( it seems I have a different plan everyday lately)
7 a.m. - banana
8 a.m. - protein shake (just 1 scoop of chocolate protein 2/ 4 oz skim milk & 4 oz water)
9 a.m. - coffee w/ splenda and skim milk
10:30 a.m. - pear
12:30 p.m. - 2 slices of turkey breast rolled w/ 2 slices of swiss cheese and some 2% milk cheese cubes - 1/3 cup of "craisins"
3:00 p.m. - protein shake (same as above)
6:00 p.m. - dinner - most likely a tilapia filet and string beans
9:00 p.m. - protein shake w/ frozen strawberries
I try not to put too much in the protein shakes - especially now that it's cold out - I will use the davinci syrups or frozen fruit and maybe 1/2 of a banana but that's about it. and I WILL get back to the gym - tomorrow! (I can't go today since I made plans with a friend to go shopping right after work)
I would really like to see 20 pounds gone by Christmas...it's a goal!
You've helped a lot! Thank you...
Love, Linda
I don't think you can become immune to protein. It is more like a food than a drug, although I suspect it might be healthier to vary your protein sources...although I have nothing to back this up.
I no longer drink protein drinks. I eat enough food to get in my protein and plenty of calories. My bloodwork last month was fine, so I'm not worried about it. It is tempting now to eat more carbs, and less protein, but I think I'm fine. HOpe this helps.
Hi Linda,
Just saw your post.
I don't think our bodies get "immuned" to foods, but, I think at this point out from surgery, having protein in the form of drinks really doesn't stay with you very long. It may make you hungrier and thus you may be eating more. Try now to get your protein in the form of dense foods like meat, protein bars (watch how many carbs are in them) etc.
I know it's hard to get in all of your protein by food, but, if you eat your protein first, and have 3-5 oz per meal, that's 21gms. Times 3, you've got your days needs met.
However, some people like to get in more, so they'll supplement with a shake for a snack.
Today, I'm back on shakes for all three meals. I've gone off track a bit and need to cleanse my body of carbs and sugar and I'm just doing shakes all day long today and lots of water. I may be doing it for a couple of days until I feel better. The sugar has put me in a coma like state (bad Paula!)
Good Luck,
paula
