Well well, look at what I did today!
I painted my kitchen! It was white with beige cabinet doors (yuck), so I painted the beige a pretty butter-yellow. No WAY I could have done this a year ago! It looks so good, and I am very proud of myself!
WHAT SHANNON LEARNED THE HARD WAY TODAY:
1. The top of my refrigerator is really disgusting
2. Bugs are stupid and like to land in wet paint.
3. Cats will purposely go out of their way to walk in a spot of paint and leave tracks on your floor because they think it's funny.
4. Masking tape will stick to anything besides where you want it to go.
5. Do not paint in clothing you might possibly want to wear in public again.
6. No matter what the stupid paint can claims, you will need two coats.
7. I could have cut my time down a lot manually removing and putting back my hardware if my husband hadn't taken my cordless drill on the road.
8. They make drop cloths for a reason.
9. Don't panic when paint looks too light at first, it dries darker.
10. Having your 6-year old daughter "help" you paint will make more work for you. Having her learn something valuable and that she CAN do anything she puts her mind too, priceless.
Shannon,
Way to go! I bet they look nice! I, personally, hate painting! I have a hutch that needs to be painted black for my red/white and black kitchen. I have to muster up some creative energy to get it out and do it soon. I need the space the hutch will bring to me on an empty wall in the kitchen. My wall in the kitchen are blood red! SO COOL!
We just paid a paint contractor 5000 bucks this past spring to paint out ENTIRE house! Interior, that is. Every wall, every door and piece of woodwork in the house. We were living for 4 1/2 years with the contractor's paint job when they built the house and it was nothing more than primer! UGH
Now I have lots of color in every room. LR is a sage green. DR, halls and stairwell is a lighter, beige with a yellow tone, 1/2 bath is yellow, kids bath is the darkest, brightest orange you've ever seen (but goes well with their fish theme), son's room is an electric blue (but very soothing), daughter's is teal, our MBR is a dark mauve and our bathroom is the color of calamine lotion, a purplish pink...and, the kitchen is RED! All woodwork is white as are the doors. They did a great job and did it in just one week. It was wonderful to just have them come in and do it. No messes, no clean up, nada..
Now we're broke!
Now I have to get going with wall decor and curtains.
You hit the nail on the head with all of your "awarenesses while painting!" They are SO true! I'm glad your daughter "helped out" even if she did make a mess....When we had our basement finished, we did the painting ourselves...the rugs weren't in yet, so, we let the kids go to town with their own rollers and brushes and paint trays...they just slopped on the primer and then paint and I had to go and redo everything they did! But, it was great fun for us all. They used WAY too much paint on a two foot square space, but, paint is cheap! Memories are priceless, as you said.

Looks like we had the same idea except I am painting my living room. Trying to be artistic.. So far painted half way up the wall.....dark ! The top half will be maybe off white. Still going to attempt to "sponge" paint when the bottom is dried. My first time at trying this.. I'm happy I can get on the floor with only a little amount of trouble but now my knees hurt I need one of those gardening pads.....
