UGH! What a month it's been!

September has not been a great month for me September 8th I was in the ER with pains in my belly - my surgeon ran some tests and then did an upper endoscopy to find that I have 2 ulcers. He prescribed medication which I took more than willingly so that the pain would stop and I could eat and drink again without the feeling of knives cutting into me. September 9th - One year out and feeling the healthiest I have felt in years being down 124 pounds... Three days later the pain was back - I figured that the meds weren't working yet and just needed to give them some time...the pain came and went and then came again - on and off for a week...by Thursday night the 21st I couldn't take the pain anymore and Friday morning called my surgeon at 6 a.m. to have him tell me to get to the ER...He met me there at 7 a.m. - he ran more tests - they did a gallbladder sono and a CT of my abdoman with die contrast...all came back completely normal...as I laid on the bed in the ER in severe pain my surgeon said that he felt he needed to go in and check things out...so emergency surgery it was...4 hours later I was being put to sleep. Surgery began at 5:30 and I was awake at 8:30 p.m. - I don't remember a lot of what he told me at that time - actually I don't remember much of anything - next thing I remember is waking up in a room and the nurse telling me it was 2 a.m. and that she wanted me to walk a little...Dr. Ahmad came in at 8 a.m. and explained that my intestines had some scar tissue on them which was causing them to "loop" and hence causing me pain and that they are now fixed and I should be back to normal and feeling great...he said that it would have gotten worse before it got better and he was glad I decided to do the surgery now...So now I have 4 new holes in my belly (and one in my belly button) and eventually I will just be able to play "connect the dots" - The pain I went into the ER with is gone (Thank God!!) and now I have the pain from the surgery (which I know will go away with time) - The gas is the worst and my stomach looks as tho I am 5 months pregnant (it is so distended) because it is filled with gas - I am sore but I will live So - now what NOT to do when you come home from the hospital after surgery - () I came home - changed into sweats and my huge t-shirt - but first I thought "let's see what I weigh" (I hadn't eaten or drank anything since Tuesday night other than the few jellos in the hospital) - OMG I had gained 14 pounds!!! I almost threw up! My best friend was in my kitchen waiting for me to come out and when I did she asked me what was wrong - I told her about the 14 POUNDS! and she laughed - she said with all the gases and fluids they pumped into you I'm surprised that's all it was - look at your stomach. So I settled down and accepted that once the gasses are gone I will be back to where I was - Surgery was Friday night - today is Monday morning and I STILL look 5 months pregnant and can't fit into any of my pants (not that I really have tried since it would hurt way too much) - I stepped on the scale this morning and I'm down 8 of the 14 so far. I really still can't eat because I am so bloated and feel so full and I'm having a really tough time drinking anything other than tea. I would like to try and go back to work tomorrow morning because if I don't I won't be able to catch up but if I can't get into my clothes I won't be able to go Sorry this is so long I guess I just needed to vent! I thought that September would be a great month being out a year and wonderful things have been happening in my life but I think I would prefer to just erase this month from the calendar for now! Love, Linda

Linda, Sorry you had trouble. At least they found out what was causing it. Who knows you probably will lose that 14 plus more in the long run.because of not being able to eat ...Hope you feel better. Sandy

When I had my Kidney surgery, I came home from the hospital 10 pounds heavier than when I went in. I was hospitalized for 4 days. Over the next three weeks, I lost those 10 pounds and 30 more. Don't fret, the hospital weight will come off.

hey Michael - thanx for the encouragment! 13 of the 14 pounds are gone as of this morning and now that I am back to work and TRYING to get back on program (altho I am so bloated that I can't really take too much in yet) I am hoping that the pounds just melt off my body Linda

Linda, I am so sorry you have had this trouble. Oh my gosh though, what a great doctor to be with you and find out all of this. What an ordeal. I feel for you. I am going into surgery next Monday for a knee replacement and I have to tell you I am stressing about it already - will I be able to get in my protein, will I want to, what about my vitamins, when can I walk -- just all of that and now thinking I may more than likely come home with more pounds than I went in with. And I haven't lost weight for a few weeks anyway!! Well I know October is going to be better for you, so just get September out of your mind!! love donna

Donna I wish you the best with the knee surgery...as I told you before my brother had both knees replaced and is doing so well - he's like a new person - he runs after his grandchildren all over the place now! Don't be stressed please .. as Michael told me in response to my venting/rant he lost more weight when he came out of the hospital! I was feeling so bad that I hadn't had my vitamins, water or ANY protein for 3 days before the surgery and really haven't gotten back on the program because of this bloated feeling - I just started back on my vitamins this morning again (I could finally get them down) but protein and water are another story...one sip or bite of anything at all and I'm full to the brim! .. I'm sure that in a day or two my appetite will come back but as of this morning I had lost 13 of the 14 pounds I gained in the hospital (all the gasses and fluids) and I'm hoping that when all is said and done I will have shed another 5 pounds on top of that (we'll see) I'm just hoping that I can stop looking as tho I am 3 months pregnant very soon! You'll be just fine with the surgery - maybe you can ask your surgeon to talk to the surgeon that is doing the knee surgery and they can set up orders for the hospital to make sure you get all your vitamins and maybe a protein supplement while you're in there? How long will you be hospitalized for? and being that they are doing surgery on your knee and not your stomach I can't see why you can't bring what you need with you to make you feel more comfortable...ask your surgeon!!! Keep us posted and please relax - I'm sure that everything will go very smoothly! Love, Linda

Thanx Barb - it seems to be coming off - the gain is almost gone - now if I could just get rid of the bloat and the soreness I would be back to normal - guess that's going to take more than 3 days tho hugssss..Linda
