what is this horrible pain????

I have been having a pain in my belly since Tuesday and it seems to be getting progressively worse It doesn't hurt unless I eat or drink something - anything - vitamins included! I can't drink water because even a sip causes stabbing pain to the point of doubling over - It seems to be moving into my lower back now as well as my belly and it's not making me happy! Something similar to this happened to me about 4 months ago and I took myself to the emergency room (on surgeon's orders) where they ran all sorts of tests and found nothing wrong (not a bad thing) - he said that he thought it might be a stomach virus of some sort... well it's BACK - worse this time than last time! I am fine unless I eat or drink - short of going to the ER or calling my surgeon does anyone have any suggestions???? I will be out a year on Saturday (9/9) and I was just telling friends that I am so fortunate to have not had any complications or illness since the surgery and now this I am just concerned that I will dehydrate since I can't drink - my body is used to 100 oz or more of water a day - I've had less than 20 oz since Monday night. ugh! Linda surgery weight 300 current weight 172 goal weight 145 (personal goal - dr's goal is 160)

thanx - I haven't tried milk...I haven't really tried anything...water hurts - even the tiniest of sips - I am holding off calling the surgeon mainly because I don't want to have to spend an entire day in the ER running tests...I'm actually hoping it's just a virus but I'm just not sure I can tolerate this pain for much longer maybe I'll try some milk when I get home from work - I'll let you know!

Hi Linda, call your doctor -- now!! it's probably nothing, but I always am fearful it could be something else, I don't know a stricture, or something similar. It could be an ulcer (I have an ulcer and it sounds similar to mine when I forget to take my medicine!). But I would call your doctor. Please -- Let us know I'll be curious. love donna

I got the flu, I threw up alot and had diarea and ended up in the e.r. with an IV for 4 hours becouse of dehydration,They figure thats where the pain was coming from was the dehydration. Now I get that every month about 7 days b4 my cycle, if it's not in that 10 dys when the cramps start I forse myself to drink , juice milk warm tea whatever no matter how much i thow up cuz I DO NOT want to go through the IV thing again. I have 3 ulcers at the connection to my pouch and if I don't take the meds for even one day I feel like that. Maybe the dr should do an endoscopy or a barium swallow. Let us know how you make out.

Micha, I didn't know that you had an ulcer too!! So do I (as does Paula). When I went to San Diego a few weeks ago I forgot my meds but didn't think it was a big deal cause I didn't think my ulcer was that bad. Oh my gosh - I almost died!! I really didn't make the connection till I was flying home!! Talk about dumb. I thought maybe I just had gas or something. But I suffered Monday, and Tuesday on the plane. Once I got home and took it it was almost instant relief. What do you take!! I take prilosect. love donna

Linda, Sounds like an ulcer, to me. I got one over the summer and your symptoms sound just like mine did. I couldn't even ge****er down without it feeling like a thousand knives going down. Call your surgeon right away. Don't do the ER, they don't know the correct way to care for you. Make sure you get to see your surgeon. I had an upper GI with small bowel follow through and it showed nothing, but, my symptoms persisted and my surgeon put me on quick dissolving Prevacid twice a day (he told me it works best with WLS patients) and liquid Carafate (to cover and heal the ulcer). I was on a liquid diet for almost three weeks to calm things down in there and I felt SO much better in less than a month. I have to take the meds for 3 months per surgeon's orders cause he wants it to heal fully. No one really knows why this happens. Maybe something we eat that irritates it. There's no stomach acid in there to irritate it. Good luck. let us know how you make out. paula
