Hey all, well I am almost 11months post op and my European vacation is around the corner. I have been living on a low fat lifestyle and enjoying it. My delima is I have a 17day vacation ahead of me mostly in Germany. I love german food, and I know it is very high in fat. I am considering on switching for my 8 days there to a low carb diet. I will have 1ltr of beer at Oktoberfest, probably take me all day, but it will be worth it. That is on my 1 year anniversary. Then I am going on a 6 day cruise. I know on the cruise ship I won't have a problem since I will have lots of healthy options. Any suggestions as far as going thru Germany? Should I just enjoy myself there and go back to my normal lowfat lifestyle once I start back on the cruise? Thanks, Mike

Hey Mike, My doctor basically recommends a low carb diet and I've followed it in principle since surgery. However, I've got to be able to live with this my whole life so I do eat carbs etc...except no sugar (I dump). What I've found is no matter what you eat, you can really only eat so much. So I try to make healthy decisions but don't alway. However, I'm not going to be able to eat an entire bag of chips and 3 big macs. My advice would be eat what agrees with you (dosen't make you sick), don't get overly full, and have a great time. Courtney

Michael, As you know, I am currently living here. I know you can do whatever healthy eating you decide here. Most German restaurants are full of protein things. I also LOVE the Italian and Chinese restaurants here. But know that you will be fine. It is a matter of choices. ENJOY and know you can hardly eat a lot even if you wanted to. I challenge you to REALLY finish that Liter of beer at Oktoberfest. I bet you tummy doesn't let you or it takes a week to do it..giggle giggle. Hope we do get to met for lunch one day during the trip but if not... Take care and HAVE FUN!! jacqueline

Hey Michael, I'm free about that time (when is it??) and would be available to go along with you and sort of guide you (and me) on what to eat. I think that would be workable, don't you!!! Ha ha - b ut it sounds like you are going to have a blast. I agree with what Courtney says -- low carb, watch what you eat, and have a ball!! If you want me to go I'm a light packer and a fast packer!! love donna

Great for you ... hope you have a fantastic time. On my last vacation I packed a bunch of protein bars for when I was in trouble and good choices became scarce . If you are still on protein drinks is there a way to have that with you as well. Keep the beer in, how could you go to Oktoberfest and not drink it, I think that you would be breaking some kind of law and end up in jail.....the 8 days your in Germany I would enjoy with out over indulging, moderation is key, you have the rest of your life to loose what little you may gain. Try to avoid sugars and stuff you really want to still dump on when you get back. Exercise if you can to help defray any extra calories. but most of all Have a great time and give us all the details when you get back...... donna
