Spent last 9 days in hospital!!!
Hi All,
Well, I spent my one year anniversary as a post op in the hospital, having emergency surgery. I went to school on Friday the 23rd and felt fine at 8:00a.m., and at about 9:20a.m., I thought I was dying. I thought it was extremely bad gas pains, but it just kept getting worse and worse. Well, my sister, (thank God I was with her), got me to my surgeon's office, and they sent me straight to the hospital for labs. I had started having uncontrollable dry heaves, and was just sobbing in pain. I don't remember child birth hurting as much as this did. Well, the tests showed that my white blood cell count was sky high, which is a sure sign of infection or something else wrong. They admitted me right away, and I spent Friday and Saturday undergoing a lot of tests, CT scans, xrays, etc. I don't really remember a whole lot from Friday through Sunday. On Sunday, my surgeon came in and said that I was going into surgery right away as I had a kink in my bowel and it was obstructed. Well, it was supposed to be a 1 to 2 hour surgery, and it ended up being 4 and 1/2 hours! Turns out I had an adhesion from my original WLS that had caught a two foot loop of my intestine and closed it off. The dr had to remove 2 feet of dead intestine, and replace it with intestine from the other limb of my Roux-n-y as I couldn't survive on the intestine left after he removed the dead part. Well, I woke up fully on Tuesday, and have been in pain since. This surgery was way more intensive and extensive than my original WLS, and I am so much sorer. I think I am dealing with it better because I have lost so much weight though. Let me tell you though, when a dr tells you that you were about two hours from dying, it really makes you think about a lot of things. I am so grateful that I am alive! Things are progressing well now. I am VERY bloated, and it looks like my surgery has reversed itself! It hasn't of course. In fact, my dr looked at my pouch and the rest of my WLS, and says it all looks great. Heck of a way to find out though! My incision is now about 8 inches longer, as the block was in the lower right abdominal area, and my surgeon cut me on the same line as my WLS. Not so happy about the huge scar I'm gonna have, but I am so glad I'm still breathing!! I am home finally, after having spent 9 days in the hospital. All I can say is please, PLEASE pay attention to what your body is telling you! I got too comfortable in my uneventful health situation, and this scared the heck out of me!! Hope none of you ever go through this.
Blessings to you all,
Tonya
