Greetings Everyone Hope you are all enjoying the beautiful New York weather!! Now for my latest dilemma! During the daytime hours I am very good about staying on program. Eating my protein, small meals, drinking all my water etc. The only bad thing now is that I crave ICE CREAM and have come to realize that my pouch also loves this creamy treat because I DO NOT DUMP! I now tend to look forward to having some ice cream after dinner as dessert. I am frustrated because I do so well all day long and then blow it after dinner. I know that this is still protein to some degree but I am worried about the sugar content and the fact that my body does NOT dump. Why???? I don't like the fact that I don't dump because now I know that I can CHEAT with sweets and be able to get away with it. Please do not flame me because I am frustrated with myself as it is, especially since I was the one who would always say that I WILL NEVER AGAIN EAT ANYTHING SWEET. I am still losing weight at a slow rate but nontheless, it is still coming off. I have now lost a total of 110 lbs and have no intentions of gaining back any of it. Is is so bad to have some ice cream or am I totally defeating the WLS purpose? Could it be that I may NOT be eating enough during the day? Basically me meals for the day consist of: B--protein drink L--small protein meal NO carbs Snack--protein drink Dinner--6 oz meal PROTEIN FIRST! Please advise me with some suggestions other than not to have ice cream in the house because I know that if it is not ice cream, I will probobly find something else that my pouch will like that will satisfy my sweet tooth! What can I do to break this sugar crave since dumping is not a consequence for me! Thanks Everyone! Totally embarassed and with myself! and the DID NOT make me do it! Marianne :halo

Have you tried Jello Sugar-Free Chocolate Pudding? I love it. It gives me a rich chocolate creamy treat for desert, and I don't have to worry about sugar. Also one of the key factors I need to learn is moderation. If you must have the ice cream, make the best choice possibe and eat it in moderation. Try not to beat yourself up over this. We are still learning what our bodies can tolerate, and how to most effectively use our "tool". Count this as a learning experience and put the best spin possilbe on it. Don't let it send you into a downward spiral. Hope this helps, Sherry

I am now and always will be an ice cream junkie. I now buy Blue Bunny Carb Freedom Ice cream (it doesn't taste sugar free to me but it is) It comes in things like Rocky Road and Fudge Almond Brownie. I know that I will always want ice cream so I buy this and limit myself to a very small amount in a very small bowl when I crave it (every night). I think if I tried to deprive myself of this totally, I would just make things worse so I try to get the next best alternative to the real thing. Hope this helps!

My only advice: Try every surgar free/no sugar added/low carb ice cream out there. If you like ice cream sandwhiches - healthy choice are good, just cut them in half to lower the carbs/sugar intake. They keep well in a ziplock. Yesterday, Eric and I were out with his parents at the mall and the ice cream/yogert place had sugar free soft serve, so for the first time since surgery Eric and I shared a cone. It felt sinful and the carbs were 3 per ounce. The times I've had a bit (literally 1 bit) of anything sugar sweetened (cake, cookie, pie) it's been too sweet to really enjoy beyond the bite. We've been lucky that sugar free nella wafers are enough to satisfy... along with the occational SF PF Melano Mint cookie. Good Luck on the resistance. Tina

Breyer's Carb Freedom ice cream is great. 1/2 cup has around 100 calories. peanut butter fudge and neopolitan taste awesome. real ice cream gives me indigestion. also if i need a sweet treat I eat one piece of dove dark chocolate. it's satisfying and has only like 45 cals. Good Luck!! -KT

Marianne - Don't beat yourself up! You are doing awesome! Our surgeries were one day apart and we have lost the exact same amount, 110 pounds! And I don't dump from sugar either. Actually I may post that question separately because I used to dump from sugar right after the surgery but then it stopped. Wonder if that happened to anyone else? Anyway, getting back to your question. The surgery is a tool which is helping us lose and then eventually my goal is to eat "normally" which will include an occasional small bowl of ice cream. Of course i said "small," not eating the whole pint which I would sometimes do before the surgery, LOL! But something to think about is whether the ice cream every night is interfering with reaching your goal? If not, I would say, have a small serving if that is making you happy. Several of my friends are doing some kind of French Women's diet. Not sure of the details but they are eating small amounts of great food and feeling very satisfied and losing. I personally would rather eat small amounts of something fabulous than alot of something that tastes like cardboard! Have you tried the sugar free Joseph's cookies? (http://www.josephslitecookies.com) I have a few every night after dinner, they are delicious. Or I have an Edy's SF popsicle or some SF FF jello pudding that I make with the Carb Countdown FF milk. I need a little something sweet at the end of the day, and then I don't eat after 8 pm. (Even thou I don't dump from sugar, I have the SF desserts because of the lower carbs.) Good luck! I love the Eddy's No Sugar Added Butter Pecan - it is delicious and tastes sinful as well. I have had trouble since surgery with not tolerating milk products so I just bought some over the counter laxtaid (not sure of the spelling) but you chew one at the time you are eating any dairy products and my problem has been solved. I too do not dump on sugar but was happy to learn that I could have a scope of this and feel normal again. Good luck.

Marianne, I like ice cream too! Sometimes I get the No Sugar Added Butter Pecan or Chocolate Mint by Dryers, but what I like even more than is Klondike's Reduced Fat & Calorie No Sugar Added Slim-A-Bear ice cream sandwiches. They come in a white, flat box and the words NO SUGAR ADDED is in big blue letters right above the picture of the square ice cream sandwich. These are VERY good. They have 120 calories, only 3 grams of fat, 3 sugars, 1 sugar alcohol and 4 protein. They have some ones that are in a similar box that say Slim-A-Bear 98% fat free, but those have a lot of sugar in them. This white box has six in the box and they are not stacked on top of each other. They have a package of reduced calorie ones that are wrapped in a clear cello type wrap, those are NOT No Sugar Added ones. You can go to their website and click on the specific product then find out what stores in your area sell them. I don't think just because we've gone through this surgery does that mean we cannot enjoy a treat now and then, we just need to make sure we make the right choice as to what kind it is. Good luck to you!!! Jill P. 288/190/145 9-21-04
