My poor back is just KILLING me!!!! I am having trouble sleeping b/c of back pain and spasms. I am trying a new "body girdle" to see if it helps. It's my lower back, and oh it just hurts. Anyone else??? Anything works?

Leslie - Sorry sweetie that you are having such awful back pain. Does Tylenol help at all? How about Tylenol PM? That stuff knocks me out. Everything seems worse when you're tired. Hope you get some relief soon. Hugs, Sandy

Sandy, I haven't tried actual tylenol b/c some of the pain medicine I already take contains it. I have hydrocodone for pain (chronic pain is just part of having MS and psoriatic arthritis). These spasms are just not being relieved by it. The tylenol PM is a good idea, though. Maybe that would get me some good sleep. Thanks! Leslie

I am so sorry to hear about your back. I must admit that I have had some pains, but I think what you are experience seems much worse. Do you do many back strengthening exercises? After I started exercising and including a bit of lower body exercising (conditioning), that seemed to help. Of course, when your back hurts, the last thing you want to hear is exercise it. But, I just wanted to let you know that for me, all the stretching helped. I hope you get to feeling better, Love, Trudi

I haven't done any strengthening exercises. I was afraid that would cause the muscles to spasm more. But the stretching is a GREAT idea. I think I'll try to stretch it out and see how that works. Thanks! Leslie

my back starting hurting in December. I went to my PCP in January and he prescribed pain pills, muscle relaxer. It did not relieve my pain. I went back in February and the FNP gave me stronger pain pills and ordered XRay. I have read online through the library that back pain is common as our weight adjusts. The XRay came back normal and my FNP sent me for physical therapy. They told me that my Lumbar/Thorasic spine was weak from my weight loss. I am using different muscles than I was when I was heavier. So, my back was not used to the new me. I had 8 sessions and have learned new exercises to strengthen my back and my abdominal muscles. Who knew? I am not giving any medical advice but only saying what has helped me. I still have to remember to keep my back straight like connect the dots. I hope you find relief for your back pain. I had extensive back surgery in November of 2003. I was feeling much better and then I lost weight...NIGHTMARE! My back now kills me. The reason our backs are hurting is that our abdominal muscles are week. Prevention magazine this month has some of the exercises in it that I have been doing in therapy to help my muscle groups. If you can not find the magazine, I will be glad to mail you a copy of the exercises. They have really helped me and there is nothing worse than back pain. Let me know if you would like a copy mailed to you and I will do it ASAP. Also, I take Soma 350 mg and it works WONDERS for the back pain. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Hi and thanks! yes, could you email me the exercises? I would be willing to try them. I take soma daily for regular muscle spasms and dysfunction from my MS. I also take baclofen. With "average" muscle spasms, the soma does work pretty good. But these back pains are stronger than any pain reliever I have, which sucks. I called my PCP, and he is sending me to a pain management specialist (not just for the back problems - but for chronic pain from the MS and PA). I hope that helps. Thanks! Leslie

Hi Leslie, I'm sorry your back has been giving you so much grief! I think the other responses about weight loss contributing to the problem are really interesting. You would think your back would feel better from that but the other theories make sense also. I love the heating pad or ho****er bottle when I am having lower back pain. Maybe a massage from your honey??? I hope you feel better soon! Love, Sue
