Just got home - hubby had complications
Well, Scott has his RNY surgery Tuesday morning. He used the same surgeon I did. The surgery itself was uneventful and it was done laproscopically.
BUT, the next morning, I called one of the nurses and told her that his color sure did look funny. He was an alien gray. Even his lips were gray in color. They then got Scott up to walk and sit in a chair.
Afterwards, he said he felt like he needed to use the bathroom (BM). He went into the bathroom, and I followed him. Then, I saw BLOOD everywhere! there was BRIGHT RED BLOOD everywhere! His hemocrit (SP?) number is 8.7. He was losing blood very fast.
I yelled for the nurse, who was just in the hallway. She came very quickly. We cleaned most of the blood off his legs and rushed him back to bed. Within minutes, they were starting a second IV to give him blood. I was TOTALLY FREAKING OUT!
I called my mom and said "get up here NOW!" I then called Scott's dad.
Evidently, his stomach (not the pouch - the remnant stomach) was hemmoraging. He was losing 250 to 400 cc's of blood at a time! Dr. Floyd said doing a scope down to his pouch wouldn't work b/c his pouch wasn't bleeding. If the bleeding didn't stop, then he would have to REOPEN him (all the way) to get to the remnant stomach. He thought that the stomach would clot off on its own, and hopefully, we could avoid a second surgery.
Dr. Floyd personally came to the room to check on Scott every couple of hours! He was a SAINT! I can't even tell you how concerned and compassionate he was about Scott. Likewise for the nursing staff. They were phenomonal! Nurses that had finished their shifts were even calling the hospital to check on us.
Scott had FOURTEEN units of blood products - nine units of red blood and five units of FFP (fresh frozen plasma). And the remnant stomach did clot off on its own. After two days of bedrest, Scott finally stopped bleeding! It was the scariest thing in the world to see how much blood he was losing at a time.
I was scared to death - seriously. But I have to say that Edmond Medical center has got to be the best darn hospital in the world! They were GREAT!!! From the surgeon to the RN's to the CNA's. . all of them were GREAT!
Anyway, we're home now, and Scott is resting comfortably.
I don't even want to step on the scale. . I stress ate for five long days! There is no telling how much I weigh now. Oh, well. . . now that he's post op, I'm sure I'll get back on track.
Thank you both!
he is feeling better today. He's playing playstation, so you know he's starting to feel like his old self! LOL
I cannot even begin to tell you how terrified I was, but he was such a trooper. In fact, I hear more whining now than I did in the hospital. LOL
I made him a scrambled egg last night and he did eat a few bites. So he's on the way to recovery!
Oh Honey, how scary!! Hearing those stories ALWAYS reminds me of how blessed I am. I am very thankful that his problems occurred in the hospital and that you had such a wonderful experience with doctors, nurses, etc. It sure makes us appreciate them more when they have "snap to" and REALLY do their jobs!! lol The fact that he is "whinier" is a great sign. That means he really is getting better! Hope that is the only problem either of you ever have again. And, you WILL get back to eating correctly now that he is doing better. I think it so neat that you have each other to go through this together!! Thanks for keeping us updated. We care about you!!
