Does anyone remember me? There are so many new people here...Its great to see. I had my surgery done on September 2, 2004 and I am currently now4 months out and doing good...I think... I started out at the weight of 241lbs and I am now currently at 170lbs....I don't feel like I am that weight although I get compliments left and right. I still feel like I am 241lbs. I have hit a few snags but trying to work those issues out, eating wise I mean. Did anyone here have an Open RNY and is able to eat salads? I am craving them so big time but I cannot eat it yet for another month or two. Glad to be back here. I have to reaquaint myself with so many people. Erin

Hi Erin Welcome back! I remember you, glad to see you are doing well. Our weights are very close. I'm about 5 lbs more than you. (I'm prob. the slowest loser on this board, but ok with that) To answer your question, yes, I had open rny, and I am able to eat salad, but don't have much of it very often. Not like the old days when I could eat a trough of salad. I might just have half a cup next to some protein. Keep up the good work, good to see you again! ~Sue

Hello Erin, I had open RNY, and I eat tons of salad and veggies. I was a salad and veggie freak before surgery so that was a question I had for my surgeon, and I have had no problems with eating them. I did get scared tho, cause it seems I can eat alot of it with out getting full. I was told that salad and veggies are mainly water so when its chew up real well the way we chew, you can eat more of it. I dont measure my salads, I just use a soup bowl or a small plate and limit it some what. I have lost 65lb so I dont think im eating to much of it. Take care.........Amanda

Hi Erin, I had GB on the same day as you! I started out at 271 and I am now at 204, so I think I am the slowest loser! I do eat salad, but mostly focus on protein as I haven't been able to get the protein drinks down. I have had a hard time committing to the exercise. Is anyone else having the same problem? I also have had a hard time getting enough water and wound up with a kidney infection and a kidney stone....so i try REAL hard now. Take care! ~Sherry~

Hey Erin, You should always follow your Dr.'s recommendations, but since every doctor has different recommendations who is to say who is right and who is wrong....I had Lap RNY on Sept 16th and I have gone from 276 to 192 and my Doc released me a normal diet after about 2 months. I have salad (not a lot...got to leave room for the protein) several times a week and in fact i even eat Pizza on occasion. My own 2 cents worth is do everything in moderation and focus on getting your daily protein recommendations in and it should all take care of itself. Dennis

Hi Sue! Hi everyone! I just want it so bad. I have a friend who has surgery same day and is eating salad already. I guess I am just jealous....(green with envy) ROFL....I have been really bad and I mean bad eating over the holidays. I thought I did great at Thanksgiving but Christmas and New Years killed me. I am trying to get the water in but it is soooo hard to be constantly drinking. I did have a bout with kidney stones and boy is that ultimately painful. It was awful. Even the urologist told me to keep drinking fluids. *sigh* it is just so hard to do. I am following the diet as I am supposed to its just I want salad. As for exercise, forget it. I used to walk for 50 minutes a day M-F but my energy level just took a nose dive. I cannot tolerate any protein drinks so I am trying to get my protein from my food. And boy is that hard. I do have a bunch of issues and I am trying to do my best. I am afraid that I am sabbotaging myself. I'm scared of putting all that weight back on. I am finally seeing that I am losing weight (even though I feel like I am still 241 lbs) Thanks for listening. I feel so alone at times. Erin

Glad to see you back Erin! I remember all the postings you had when the Sept. forum first started. I am glad you are doing so well. Salads... mmm I wish I could eat salad and some fruit. Lately I have been able to eat cucumber salad and that has agreed with me so I am happy with that for now. Keep up the good work losing and hope to see you posting again. Doreen

I didn't have open, mine was lap, however I had the same craving. I never thought I'd want a salad so badly in my life. My doc's office recommending waiting about 6 months for salads, but I couldn't take it anymore and tried one a couple weeks ago and things went fine. My doctor's office when I told them said this is about the point that many people try and as long as it goes okay, it's fine.

Maybe you should ask your dietitian or surgeon if you can go ahead and have it earlier. If you're doing well, they might let you. I had an open RNY on 9/27 and my surgeon says I can have salad. I've had it a couple of times with great results. I went out to a pizza place with my family and the only thing I felt I could have was salad. It tasted really good. I added boiled eggs, cheese and fake bacon bits for some protein. With Italian dressing I felt like I was having a pizza salad!
