hi, i am wondering if i need an endoscopy. i will be calling my dr next week. after a bite or two, i feel like nothing else will go down. this has been going on for weeks. i'm only getting between 100 - 400 calories. i think this has slowed my weightloss (60 pounds). fluids go down fine. for those that have had them, what is the pain factor like? is it done in the office? how long did it take? are you numbed out? thanks for the help. susan

You are under a local anesthetic, and there is no pain.

I would say that you need to call your doctor FIRST THING Monday morning. You REALLY should have gone before now!!! An endoscopy is not painful at all. They give you a sedative and you never even know what happened. You will not be able to drive yourself home, so don't go to the doctor's office alone!! Best Wishes.

Susan, I went for my 3 months appointment yesterday. My husband forced me to tell Jeramie about how I have been throwing everytime I try eating meat or anything else like it. I am also only getting in very little calories. It isn't that I don't try. I will sit down with a pretty yummy bit to eat. I end up only being able to take 1 or 2 bites and then I feel very full like I ate the whole thing. I end up thrwoing most of it back up. For instance I took 3 bites of a chicken sandwich over an hour ago and I still feel it in there. It feels like I ate a whole chicken. My doctor put me on metoclopramide tabs. I am to take one 30 minutes before I eat. Unfortunantly I didn't take it with my meal today and that's probably why I still feel sickly full. I am also going to be scheduled for another EGD. They will call Monday to tell me when I go. Apparently he said there is a chance I could have a stricture. He said that when the doctor puts the probe in he will dilate the hole if it needs to be. He said the opening is the size of a dime which i pretty tiny and if it is to small i won't be getting much through. I can eat soups etc pretty well but i noticfe if I am eating soup and I try drinking the broth to fast it will all come back up. I am betting the hole needs to be dilated. I hope that helps... You sound alot like me! I had an endoscopy at 3 months and had a very tight stricture. The relief was unreal. My surgeon said it can take 2 dilations to cure the stricture. It's confusing when fluids go down but food won't. This procedure is done under what's called IV conscious sedation. They give you a nice dose of a narcotic and a medication that makes you forget everything! As far as pain, your throat might be a little sore and my pouch was a little tender---but nothing like the pain after I ate and stuff was stuck!!! Be careful. All of a sudden, the fluids may not go down fine, either! Take care, Beth -65

I just had this done on Thursday (2 days ago). It is nothing. I got it done in the hospital as an out patient. They give you an IV and then inject medication that makes you sleep (this is not anesthsia). You wake up in the recovery room of the GI Suite and don't even realize you slept or had a camera down your throat. I was very tired and groggy the rest of the day but all I have is a little sore throat. They tell you not to make any decisions that day, you can no****ch little children if you have them and you can not drive. I came home and slept. With me they found a minimal ulcer that I am taking medication for. I had my surgery 9/7/04. Good luck to you and don't worry this is/should be simple. Christine NJ LAP RNY 9/7/04 Dr. Bertha

Hi Susan, I had and Endoscopy on 12/7 and I did have a stricture that had to be dialated. It is amazing the difference it has made. I was have the same symptome as Christine and Shannon above except I wasn't throwing up. My pouch would hurt for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours after I would try to eat and I was only able to eat a couple of teaspoons of food. Because of the pain I wasn't eating much at all. It even hurt when I would drink water. Everything is much better now. I finally feel like I am able to eat what is consider a normal meal for someone who has had WLS and my energy level is finally starting to get back to "normal". I don't remember a thing that happened during the procedure. They gave me a shot ot Versed (sp). It was done in the hospital as an outpaitent procedure. I hope you find out what is going on. Keep us updated. Lisa
