Getting very worried...two small bites and I'm full!

Sorry for the long post, but I thought if anyone can help they should know all of the situation. I'm excited about the weight loss but I'm also growing more and more concerned about how it is happening. I know I need to see the doctor because each day I get worse about my intake. I feel like I'm an anorexic, except, I WANT to eat but am afraid to because everytime I eat I feel horrible. I either throw up or feel like maybe I should try to throw up. I went to breakfast yesterday at Perkins with my fiance and decided to try the eggs benedict (but with sausage and sausage gravy instead) with extra bacon instead of the hashbrowns and muffin and I took one bite and it was DELICIOUS (I planned on eating everything but the english muffin). I LOVE LOVE LOVE sausage gravy and I was eating a TINY bite that had a smidgen of sausage patty, a smidgen of loose egg yolk and sausage gravy and I chewed it for at least five minutes before swallowing. I immediately got more on the fork and this time I think there was a little too much or I had it too soon because I felt I had to chew forever... my fiance was done with his eggs by the time I finished swallowing. Then I felt sick... to be exact I felt like the old days when I would go to a buffet and have five plates of food and feel like a gluttonous fool for hours. This feeling after TWO bites did not go away for about 2 hours. I have had this happen all the time the past two weeks, but not after two bites. It has been getting progressively worse in the past month and the doctor told me he may need to scope me and do the "blow the balloon up in me to stretch the pouch out". Here is the problem... when I go off work for surgeries and procedures I lose all but five days of vacation and I have vacation scheduled starting this Wednesday for 8 working days. We are going to Ed's brother's wedding and then to the ski resort and I do not want to miss it - especially since I paid for it and it is non-refundable. Plus, living in Florida I have seen snow for exactly two hours of my life. So I figured in early November that this could wait until mid January (I also don't want to feel like crap on my son's 17th birthday on January 10th). Well yesterday my fiance said I shouldn't put this off because I'm going to get very sick. We think it might be closing up because eventually food goes down but I get the same feeling with water. The easiest things to get down are hot tea and brothy type soups. I usually order a cup of french onion, extra broth, no crouton and let Ed eat the majority of the cheese and whatever onions are there. I usually can't fini**** but I get most of it down. So yesterday my total intake was two bites of egg/sausage and about 6 "Laura" bites of chili. I was also shopping till I dropped. I haven't had my protein shake in a week (bad bad bad) because I ran out unexpectedly, but I did buy 5 more cannisters yesterday and I'm drinking one now. That should last me a good 2 months but probably won't because the kids and Ed love them and that is why I ran out early. I'm planning on going back to two protein shakes a day and try to eat something. I am definitely eating less than I did in my first week after surgery. Anyone else having this happen? Do you think that if I get my protein shakes down and most of my water that I can hold out till January? Laura 330 / 239 / 140? 91 pounds gone

I forgot to mention that when food or drink clears my throat a sound escapes that sounds like a stuck drain unplugging. It is a strange sound and I have no control over it at all. After that I feel some relief. It isn't a burp (although I do plenty of that discretely). Anyone else have this?

Laura, I had the exact same symptoms you are describing. I had a Lap RNY on 9-3-4. At my 3 month postop visit, I told my surgeon about my symptoms--but fluids would go down great.. I had an endoscope. The exit from my pouch was so narrowed, he could barely get the scope through. It was dilated and the relief was unreal!! Fluids go down better and I actually ate meat with NO frothing, NO pain and NO vomiting!! I was told it usually takes to 2 dilations to conquer this and not to be suprised if I have to have it again within 2 weeks. Please don't delay. This can become so narrow fluids won't go through---then you become really sick and dehydrated!! Take care, Beth -60

Hi Laura, Sorry you aren't feeling that great! Would it be possible for you to get off a couple of hours early on tuesday afternoon before your vacation and see if your surgeon could do the endoscope on you then? It sounds like that is probably what needs to be done, and I've heard it is a pretty simple procedure that provides lots of relief. I'm thinking you shouldn't wait till january. It sounds like the problem is worsening and you could find yourself on your vacation or on Christmas eve completely blocked up and unable to even take in even water. Ask your doc how much recovery is involved after the endoscope. If it is a really simple thing you could be feeling better and enjoying your vacations and holidays without worries. Good luck with this, and I hope all is well with you. Congrats on your amazing weight loss!!! Love, Sue

Sue, Thanks for writing. Unfortunately if I take a day off before vacation, I will be short for vacation. That is part of the reason I was waiting. I am going to see if I can be seen December 29th or so because I have a dentist appointment on Dec 28th. Also I have to drive two hours to get to my doctor. I'm doing ok, although slowly, on the protein shakes. I figure I will just do soups and protein shakes for the next two weeks. Thanks, Laura

Michelle, Thanks for responding!!! How long were you feeling that way and did it get progressively worse? Did they say you needed to have the endoscope right away or you could hurt yourself? I'm hoping to wait two more weeks because our family vacation would go out the window if I don't. How long were you out of work after the scope? Do they put you out for it? Was it the staple line at the bottom of the pouch or near the opening of the throat to the pouch? How is life after the scope? Are you able to eat more "normal for WLS patients" amounts? Can you sip water faster? (I have to wait minutes between sips). Is it a big difference? Do you think you could have waited a couple of weeks or do you think it would have closed up entirely? Did the doctor say? So many questions... thanks for your help. Laura

I do much of the same as you and it seems to be getting worse. I have a 3 month check up on the 20th but plan on calling my Doc tommorrw and speeding it up some. I can eat no meat at all now beside underwoods chicken spread that is all mush----and that noise you mentioned, well I better be near a bathroom when I do it as it means nothing is going down and it has to come up!! I will interested to see what they do about your problems. I do believe we need some help. Good luck, Sharon

Sharon, Please let me know if you get scoped too and if it helps or if you get any other tips. I am the same with the meat... I'm miserable when I try to eat it. I get the frothing when I have to throw up, but when the drain unplugging sound happens I finally feel relief and can tell it went down. I'll be checking the boards while on vacation (if they have internet acces there). I'll keep you posted. Laura

Well I am going to have to hold out until Januaray too. I saw the doc who does the scope for my surgeon today and he said yes, it does sound like I need to be checked out. It could just be swelling or inflamation or I may need to be diliated to enlarge the opening. BUT he is leaving tomorrow and won't be bac****il after Christmas. And Jan 3rd is his first day to do procedures at the hospital where my insurance pays. SOoooo I will be eating soups, yogurts, and cottage cheese et****il then. No bite of Christmas goodies for me But I guess I will make it ok. I have thus far lol. Of course if something gets stuck and can't be brought loose all bets are off and who ever will have to do it and the insurance pay anyway. So we will see. How are you doing these days with it? Have you spoke to your doctor? I see the surgeon on Monday for my official 3 month check up and will post the results . Hope you have a happy holiday!! Sharon
