Hello September People I need to hear from those who are both over 50 and over 300. ( or know someone who is). I'm willing to work the food. Drink all the water. VERY few carbs for treats. Not a bite of white flour or white sugar. BUT I can't get started with exercise!! The weight is not too bad, 55- but I know it would move faster if I just moved faster I have lots of choices but can't seem to break the ice and "just do it" advice, success stores, or kicks in the bootie would be a great Thanks!

hi ruth, does 49 1/2 count? i started off at 325. first of all, your surgery was 2 wks after me and you've lost 5 pounds more than me. i never exercised either. i just joined curves last week, where i'm headed within the hour. i find it ok because it's 30 minutes and that's it. you start and 30 minutes later you're done. you can stop anytime you want, if you need to. it is upbeat, it is all just women doing their own thing, it is just walk in with whatever you're wearing, change into your sneakers, and start. at the end, you change back into your shoes and go home. i don't even shower before i go (i do brush my teeth and put on deoderant - lol!). it definitely got easier for me as i went. and i already feel more limber. of course, i hope i still am going in a few months. but i want to be able to take nice long walks in the spring and i think this will condition me well. good luck! i think that there really isn't motivation to do these things - we just have to do them. and the best part is the fabulous feeling of accomplishment you feel after you finish. susan

I am 55, was 347 and now 290. We all have been bad at exercising at least part of our lives, so don't feel alone. The hardest part of any exercise program is getting started - the first short walk, the first short swim in the pool, or the first weight lifting were difficult for me to get started. The more weight I lose, the more exercise I can do. Walking is probably the best/easiest to start. I bought an am/fm radio with headphones that I sometimes wear. I really enjoy exercising now! I actually look for opportunities during the day to do more. For some people, it may be hard to change exercise habits right after WLS because we are also changing our eating habits, so don't be discouraged! Do what you can and then try to improve on that. Good Luck!

Ruth, You have to just do it. Most people start out with too much. Just tell yourself for example, today I am going to walk down the street and back. Then the next day just go a little bit further and so on. Park far away from the places you are going into, take the stairs once in a while. Gradually increase your activity and before you know it you will be going all the way around the block. The key is to never let yourself go any less than the time before.
