I need some high protein help....
What are some of the things you are all eating that are high in protein? I don't mean the protein drinks either. I mean actual solid foods.
It seems that all the things I liked pre-surgery don't taste the same. I keep trying the small chili from Wendy's and it still doesn't taste like it did prior to surgery. I think I am going to call it quits with that. Anyone else having similar issues???
Shannon
Hi Shannon!
Have you tried the Hickory Farms Turkey Summer Sausage? For 2 ounces it has 70 calories, 4 grams of fat, 2 net carbs, and 13 grams of protein. As for chili, I make my own in the crockpot with 1 can of red bean, 1 can kidney beans, 1 can of diced tomatoes, 1/2 pound of ground beef, and a packet of chili seasonings. For 1 cup of chili it's 242 calories, 7 grams of fat, 16.5 net carbs, and 17.5 grams of protein. If you make your own then you can control the fat which can be a problem as well as the taste.
I also love cheese(string, laughing cow, cheddar, etc), beef jerky, pepperoni, soy nuts, almonds, soy pretzels, and just about any meat done in the crockpot since it's so tender. My favorite crockpot recipe is swiss steak where you take round steak and a can of diced tomatoes and let it cook all day. The meat literally falls apart and is so tender and a half a cup of steak has 22 grams of protein.
I actually had to search high and low to find a few great protein drinks that I'm willing to live forever with, but I'm always looking for high protein foods to go with them. We gotta cover all our bases to make sure our bodies are getting enough protein.
Hope that helps.
Julia
Thanks for the ideas. I usually love things made in a crock pot. I dont' own one but my sister does and I could always ask her to make me a roast or something. Anything moist enough that doesn't get stuck is good to me. One big issue now is that even though I make like say an 8 oz bowl of soup etc I can usually only eat half, or less. So I start out with great intentions and then end up not getting in what I planned. It is all trial and error and they tell me there will come a time when I wi**** was hard for me to eat things.

Watch the beans .... they can make your tummy gassy and bloated.
What I have found that is good are those little vienna sausage in a can. Chicken or regular. I think the chicken has more protein like 9 g. or something. But Those are so easy to digest too due to their consistancy. The other thing is fish. Smoked salmon , beef jerkey , tuna .... any of those are high in protein. THe fish is low in carbs too. A good thing. Slicked lunchmeat. High protein low carbs. Try sliced ham or thinly sliced chicken breast. You can always tear these up and dip in your favorite condiment for more flavor.
Hope this helps.
Hi Shannon (my surgery twin),
How about cottage cheese? string cheese? peanut butter? egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad? shrimp? pea soup? yogurt?
I like to make egg salad and then roll up about a teaspoon of it inside a slice of deli ham.
I also spread peanut butter on a whole wheat cracker and top it off w/ a slice of cheese.
Hope that helps,
MaryAlice
Shannon,
Be careful with the peanut butter...lots of fat in it. There's a site called fitday.com that you can put in what you'd like to check on and it will bring up the nutritional values. Be sure to adjust for the correct serving size. My 'high' proteins have already been listed here...chicken, fish, refried beans, and cheese. Milk is hard for me to do too, but latte's made with slim milk and SF flavoring is a quick tasty way to add protein (20 oz drink =170 cals, 17 g protein). Also, I get protein supplements from BariatricEating.com. Elite Pina Colada flavor is my favorite...It's around 100 cal for 2 scoops which is what I do a day) and 46 g protein. You can get sample size packs to find the taste you prefer. Many also prefer Nectar's fuzzy naval (order from same place). We are too early out to not get our protein in. Besides, I plan on my hair not falling out. So...yummy shakes!
