I was just released to regular food last week and I have thrown up every day since. My doc is a great surgeon but is not much on aftercare, he said to just eat what I can tolerate. I don't know if I am eating too much (I measure meals and stay at or below 2 oz), or too fast, or just picking the wrong foods. I am really tired of throwing up. Any advice? I am down 44 lbs so I guess I should be happy about that.

what are you eating? be sure to not eat chicken, steak or stuff like that if you are throwing up already. you can try eggs, cream cheese, yogurt and stuff like that....somethings i eat is cheese quisadillas(not sure if thats spelled correctly), refried beans with cheese, shrimp, fish(baked whiting), eggs, yogurt, cream cheese, nuts(not too many though). Just make sure to try the softer foods until you can tolerate food better. I also had a salad for the first time last week.

Go to Diet made simple. This is what I was told: You have to treat your pouch like you would an infant. It has to learn all over again how to take in food. Since your doctor doesn't do aftercare, I'll give you a condensed version of the post-op book I have from Cleveland Clinic... If you already know this, that's good - but I'm covering the basics. All medications need to be chewable, crushed (take with unsweetened applesauce or yogurt), or in liquid form. Vitamins: Mulitvitamin specially formulated for bariactrics, iron 30mg/d, vitamin B-12 1000 mcg/d, calcium citrate (not carbonate) 1500 mg/d, Vitamin C 30mg/d. Don't take calcium and iron at the same time. General Rules for food: less than 5g sugar per serving chew well, 25 times each mouthful 3 meals, 20 - 30 minute duration (we take up to 40min sometimes) No fluids 30 minutes before, during, and after meals Goal is 60 - 70 g of protein/day 1 oz of meat = 7 g protein Start with simple meats: egg beaters, eggs (not more than 1 yolk/day), cheese (no processes cheese foods), cottage cheese, yogurt, skim milk, tuna (in water), Fish - fresh white, shrimp, beans, Boar's Head turkey or ham - shaved, tofu, boca burger, soy products (this is where soy pasta comes into play for us), and ground meats. If you start purging, do not eat solid food for a day. Allow your pouch a chance to rest. Start with clear liquids for 24 hours. If well tolerated with no nausea or vomiting, advance to protein shakes for 24 hours. If well tolerated, advance to soft protein foods. Once you can handle proteins for 1 month, then add in veggies - start with cooked first. Remember your stoma size is approx. the size of a dime. Avoid: corn, fresh asparagus, broccoli stalks, and celery. Introduce new foods one at a time for tolerance. Blood work: 2 weeks, 2 months, 6 months, then annually. It is important to monitor your blood work on a regular basis after surgery to detect any nutritional deficiencies. Do not chew gum Do not drink caffeine Avoid alcohol for the first year. and remember after that you'll become tipsy faster. Monitor tolerance to milk. many become lactose intolerant. you may have to switch to soy milk or Lactaid. Consume minimal calories. Carbohydrates should be less than 40g/day. Take precautions to NOT get pregnant during the first 12 - 18 months. If you get constipated - milk of magnesia, Metamucil, or Colace will help, but don't become dependent on them. Drugs to Avoid: Advil, Alkaseltzer, Anacin, Ascriptin, Aspirin, Bufferin, Coricidin, Cortisone, Dolobid, Empirin, Excedrin, Feldene, Fiorinol, Ibuprofen, Meelomen, Motrin, Nalfon, Naprosyn, Norgesic, Pepto-Bismol, Tolectin, and Vanquish. Good medicines: Benadryl, Robitussin, Triaminics, Dimetapp, Sudafed, and Tylenol. I know this is really long, but you said "not much on aftercare" and that really had me concerned.

I wasn't able to eat meatballs either, I actually ended up in the hospital because the throwing up, just would not stop and I dehydrated myself. Take it slow and try chickn boiled with some seasoning , tuna, if your going to have ground beef , browning with seasoning and then add cheese like a taco wtih out the shell. I was able to tolerate that , if that don't work go back to mushy foods for at least 3 days , this helped me alot. I hope this helps . good luck Rachel 277/250/ 225
