hi, i've let go of having avocado after i saw the nutritional value wasn't worth it. i do miss the creaminess and ease of eating it. what do you think of fresh hummus (chick pea spread) or baba ganush (ganuj) - i know it's spelled different ways - smoked eggplant spread. i tried looking these up on the 'net for nutritional values because i bought them from a mom 'n pop armenian market and they are not labeled. they seem high in protein and lower in fat. anyone else eating this? they went down so easily yesterday. plus a had a tbls of green bean/tomato salad - it was a stewed cold salad - the vegies were very soft. again, went down so well. and tasty. susan

My nutritionist just gave me a list of foods to boost my protein, and hummus is on it. She also stressed to me that the high fiber content in hummus is good for your health (heart, bowel, etc). In short, if you can tolerate it, hummus is your friend.

Hi Susan, I've had these once each since surgery as well and they went down fine for me too. They are very nutritious foods (I'm Armenian and make it homemade, it's very easy and nothing bad in it.) For nutritional information, fitday has baba ghanoush under "eggplant dip" and hummus also is listed. Of course these can vary by ingredients, but I think the nutritional info is pretty reliable on these two. Like anything else, just eat small amounts. Enjoy! btw for anyone who cant eat pita or crackers, dip small bits of grilled chicken or steak in it, it's even better than pita bread! ~Sue

thanks, sue! i brought the baba ganoush to work today with baby pitas (they're like 2 inches in diameter and it was great. at the armenian market, i also bought the green bean with tomato/onion sauce and it was great with the baba. i love the idea of dipping in chicken strips - hadn't thought of that - i bought some at trader joe's just yesterday. trying to branch out. susan

I know the hummus isn't bad, not sure about the other one. I wanted to try the Hummus but wasn't sure how it tasted. My grocery store has tons of different flavors. Way to many to try and make up my mind. Shannon

hi shannon, the hummus you get in the store is chunkier than what you can make yourself (i made this so many years ago i forget how, but i don't think it's hard). the kind i bought - fresh from the place where it was made, has a totally smooth texture. susan
