Fat content in foods - Confused?

Well, I am on pureed foods and experimenting with full foods and I'm wondering if anyone else is tracking their fat intake at all. I'm kinda concerned about it. I'm at about 50 g of protein (almost there) and low carbs. It seems my fat intake is higher than it should be. I even buy lowfat cheeses, egg beaters "whites", and all other things lowfat or light when possible. I check every label before it goes in my cart. Is anyone else experiencing this?? When I was on soups post-op I was a bit high on carbs but tried to get in protein through my shakes. Soups just aren't really high in protein and they tend to be high in carbs due to the fillers (pasta). Any input would be great! Thanks, Kell

Hi Kell, I'm concerned about this as well. I discussed it with my dr. on Monday, and he told me to watch the cheese intake. Other than that, I'm not sure what we can do about this. My carbs are at a decent level and my protein is going great. Also, I think in some cases fitday may be over estimating fats in the calculations... for example, when I eat an over medium egg, I count it as a fried egg on my fit day. But in reality, I make it with just a touch of pam, so I know I'm counting more fat grams than I'm actually taking in. Could this also be happening to you? Regarding the soups... this was the whole reason I veered off of my doctors plan for me to be on full liquids and puree for so long. In many cases, the foods I would be eating under those cir****tances would be worse for me than if I transitioned myself to more foods as tolerated, as many other docs recommend. After I explained all this to my surgeon on monday, he was ok with my approach. Good luck and if you learn any more about the fat ratio in our diet, please let me know! ~Sue

hi kell, i haven't had my 1 month nutritional group yet but i do remember being told at my 1 week checkup that i didn't have to worry about eating non-fat foods anymore in terms of cheese and other dairy. the nurse said that i needed to get in some fat into the diet. i look at protein first and then calories. susan

You definently don't want to overdue the fats, but some fats are important. You need some fat in your diet to help absorb certain vitamins. I doubt that you are getting more fat in your diet now, than you were pre-op. My doctor is mostly concerned with the type of fat. Brook

Kell, My doc told me to worry about protein, then calories. I haven't counted a fat gram yet. I know we all have to be under 1000 calories a day. I am sure if you put your protein intake first--you'll be fine. I have also noticed when I eat foods with too much fat-like peanut butter-I immediately have an upset tummy. I bet your body would tell you if you were having too much fat b/c we dump sugar and fats now. Hope that helps! Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!! -Kt

I don't count a total at the end of the day but I do make sure everything I eat has 3 or less fat grams. I figure since I don't eat a bunch of food in a day the amount total isn't that high. I really don't know how much we are suppose to be eating, but that is a great question. Shannon
