16 Days Post Op
Well it has been 16 days since I had surgery. My energy level is still in the toilet but getting better. I have lost 23 lbs but I am not walking enough at all. I am so weak.
I also have noticed that I can eat more than I think I should at times. The soft mushy food is annoying but yesterday I ate overcooked pasta with a meat sauce. Just trying to get in all the protein I can.
Any advice, drop me a note.
Be Blessed!!!
I also could not do the protein shakes. I would wake up in the morning feeling great, but as soon as I took a sip of the shake I felt horrible. I found a new drink that I love. It is called Isopure and I got it from the Vitamin Shoppe. They are fruit drinks and they come in different flavors. Each bottle contains 40 grams of protein. They are awesome (I prefer the Alpine Punch)
Ok, first off WTG on the 23 pound weight loss. Your on the right track. Your energy lever will get better. One day I just woke up and I was like WOW, I feel better. My knees weren't hurting and I didn't have the usual back pains. I am wondering if maybe you have an iron problem. Sometimes that can do it, but still you just had surgery a little over 2 weeks ago. Your body will start catching up soon.
As far as eating a lot. I think I say this to everyone but if you even measured the amount you eat now, to the amount you ate pre surgery you will defienetly notice a drastic difference. Did your nutritionist give you a target total of calories per day? I am now on 500-600 a day. I try to make sure I get the right protein in but I also focus on the calories too. I am allowed to eat a little bit differently. As far as the meat sauce goes, I can't have ground beef because it is to stringy. Right now I am eating chicken and sometimes thinly sliced turkey. I am suppose to puree everything but to me it tastes nasty. I have been cutting everything very thin and chewing it to mush before I swallow. Otherwise I won't be able to tolerate the taste. Something about the pureed food makes me ill and it just tastes and looks so nasty to me. Some times I don't have problems eating this way, other times everything comes back up. I am just experimenting with what works for me.
Are you allowed to have plain cream of wheat yet? I have 1 package which is 1 oz (plain). I add water till I like the consistency. Then I put it in the microwave for 45 seconds. I have 180 degree water on tap so it may be a little bit more time if you use regular tap water. Then I add 2 tsp's of sugar free strawberry perserves. The kind I bought makes 3 flavors. I believe grape and orange are the other 2 but I like strawberry. I mix it all in. When I first started eating it a little over 2 weeks ago I was abel to finish the whole bowl. Now I can only eat half. Strange, yes but that is how it is right now.
I also read that if your not eating enough protein during breakfast and lunch, and not drinking your water that you can get hungrier at night time. Have you met with your nutritionist since surgery?? If not maybe you could make an appointment and get some better ideas of what you should be eating, how many calories etc....
Your approaching week 3. Here is what I was told I should be eating at 3 weeks
Goal
*At least 48-64 ounces of calorie free fluids daily
*50-60 grams protein

or
1/2 cup non-fat light
no added sugar yogurt
or
1/4 cup cream of wheat
or cream of rice
and
1/2 cup skim milk

2-3 ounces puree
chicken, turkey, ham or tuna
or
1/2 cup cottage cheese
and
1/4 cup whipped potato (not instant)
1/4 cup puree vegetables

Beverage: Water, decaffeinated coffee, decaffeinated tea, Fruit 2o, crystal light, flat decaf diet soda, also buillon, broth, and sugar free popsicles (limit 2 daily)
Note: you should not eat foods high in sugar or fat as they will prevent or slow weight loss and the sugars may cause the dumping effect.
This was given to me by my nutritionist. I am sure not everyone was told this but this is what I was told and this is from the sheet I was given. I hope this helps.

Kell,
I should just eat half the package considering I throw half out. It would save money in the long run. I hope you like it with the perserves. I love it and I think it adds a really good flavor. I should try it with some milk but I always forget. It would be a way to get the milk in and the extra protein, thanks for that thought.

Don't sweat it... we are all in the same boat. I am about 3 weeks post op and just now getting my energy level up. The first 2 weeks it was all I could do to just move around the house. I did feel better in the evenings than i did in the mornings. But somedays it would take me 2 hours to take my shower and do minimal primping... blow dry hair, lotion, etc. I went back to work on Monday and that has gone ok... a little slow at first. I have just been able to get my protein shakes in this week. Myoplex EAS is my fav... choc, strawberry and vanilla. I mix 8 ounces of shake with 4 ounces of skim milk ( thins it out a bit and adds more protein) and add one pak of splenda and I have a cup of "Quik". Just little to your body and it will all fall into place. Your energy level will pick up and the shakes and fluids will fall into place. Keep up the good work.
