I am a VBG patient, but my surgeon said I can have anything except fat free cheese. He says it tastes horrible, and can't imagine anyone wanting to eat it, but also it does not break down in the pouch. Reduced fat cheese is okay.

I am using fat free mozzerella in my re-fried beans and it isn't to bad. The reason they say lactose free is because a lot of people become lactose intolerant after surgery. If you find that skim milk or anything else with milk in it aggrivates you it may be the lactose. You could try the lactaid free cheese. The cheese actually has a lot of protein in it. For one serving of the mozzerella (1/4 cup) it has something like 6 grams in it. To me that is a lot for a little bit of cheese. Fat free cheese can be nasty but everyone's tastes are different so don't get a lot of it when you first try some. Shannon

Hi Michelle! Why would you need fat free? With the RNY you don't absorb fat so unless I have a lactose problem, I'm going for the regular cheese. I'm still on the clear liquid stage so I can't even have cheese yet, but when I do it won't be fat free because I don't think it tastes good. Just my opinion. Julia
