Taste Buds?

Hi Everyone! As if the bad taste in my mouth from ketosis weren't bad enough, now I've noticed that things don't taste the same anymore. I had been told that this was going to happen and was advised not to buy a bunch of protein until after the surgery. I had bought the champion whey stack chocolate and it doesn't taste the same but it's still ok. I also bought the nectar fuzzy navel and it tastes awful to me now. My question is, Is everyone else experiencing this and how long does it take before your tastes buds return to normal? Thanks! Julia

Hello Julia, I am in the same boat as you! I used to love water, now I don't know if it is the bad taste in my mouth or the water that is awful!! If you find out how long this lasts, Please let me know!

Julia, I know what you mean. I bought nectar roadside lemonade before the surgery and really liked it, but now even the smell of it makes me want to yak. I hear this all lasts for a few months. Let's hope so!

I don't know how long it lasts but it sucks. I drank the carnation instant breakfast for 2 weeks prior to my surgery. Now if I try drinking it I get sick. Tastes disgusting now. Also I have tried chicken pureed and I hate the taste. Sometimes they say your tastes change for good. I am sure some things will go back to normal over time. Shannon

Right on about the taste changes........... I have 3 ENORMOUS jugs of Nectar..............and gag at just the smell!! What a pain that is! Isn't ketosis mouth disgusting? I like your reasoning about why water tastes so yucky now........had not really thought of that... Right now about the only thing that tastes good to my is pepperjack pimiento cheese...I dip baby carrots into it....... I am still eating carb countdown yogurt every morning..don't really like it, but it does not make me gag and has 12g of protein, so it is a good start. Six ounce container....some days I can only do 3, so I do the rest for lunch. Some days, it is the whold thing plus some fruit! Go figure.

I thought it was just me too. I found that putting a little lime or lemon in the water helps a ton! I also noticed that iced tea tastes icky to me now. Getting enough water down is a challenge with it tasting weird. My tap has always been pretty chemical tasting so I'm off to the store tomorrow to buy a new filter for my water pitcher. They sell the water bottles that have a filter too. I might get one of those and use it at work.

I'm in the same boat. I use to drink lots of water before surgery....now it doesn't taste good, at least not most days. My tastes seem to change constantly. I can drink one kind of crystal lyte one day and the next it tastes gross. The only thing that has really helped me is that I now keep a large veriety of flavors around for whatever my mood seems to be. I do hope it starts to even out some day soon. Brook
