Hello! I am 8 days post. Yesterday and today I started drinking the Slim Fast low carb shake...1/2 yesterday, 1/2 today and also the new Dannon Carb Control smoothie to try to get in some protein. The only thing is, I can drink them down with no problems...I just sip, sip, sip over a period of about 20-30 minutes. I had 5 oz of Slim Fast and now I'm on my 3rd oz of smoothie...hours apart but I down them in 20 minutes. Is this bad? Is it too much of a non-clear liquid? Should I only drink 1 oz an hour like it says for full liquids? I don't want to mess anything up but it goes down so easy and I figured I needed the protein. Any advice? Thanks! Dawn

My surgeon said 1 oz every 15 min for liquids the first week. That is all I know. Kell

Mine told me after the first week just span it over 15-20 minutes. He suggests not getting up neither until your done. Some people actually time themselves to make sure they don't sit forever eating. I have to tell you that I think the reason your drinking them faster and maybe closer then a few days ago is because your tummy is healing more and isn't as swollen. After a little bit of time you need something a little thicker like a scrambled egg, cottage cheese something like that to fill your pouch longer. Well that is what i gathered. I found that as the days went on I didn't actually eat bunches and bunches I just need something a little thicker to hold me longer. I am 4 weeks out tomorrow and I don't eat much each meal but I now eat things thicker that seem to hold me much longer then just the protein drinks, etc... I hope that made sense... Shannon

I think your are drinking to much to fast, you are still healing inside. I was told to drink clear liquids for the first two weeks for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In between my meals I am to drink 1 cup of protien, in a span of 4 hours.. I bought Isopure and mixed with water, It is o.k, I would rather mix with milk for a thicker shake, and try to get in 60-80 grams of protein in per day. It is hard and have reached 50 per day. I hope to go to full liquids on 10/6/04 and be able to add soy, or Lactaid milk of a better taste. Please do what you doctor suggests.

Hi, My name is Doddye, I had surg on 22 Sep. I am new to the web site, but have lots of friends at work who have had the surg. I wanted to let you know that I too have an easy time with liquids. I have been drinking the Carnation carb control and I sip, sip, sip and I normal finish 6 to 8oz in 40min to and hour. I am normally reading or watching tv, or online like this. At first I was afraid I was weird, or something was wrong because I have no prob. swallowing, I can even swallow all my meds no prob., but I have talk to several people from work who have had same op. and they just tell me I am one of the lucky ones. So YEA for us. Doddye

You are fine. A few days after surgery they had us drinking 8oz of milk or 6oz of yogurt, while still in the hospital. There is nothing wrong with it. The liquids go down easier because they can emptly from your pouch quicker. The most important thing is just to take your time, at least 20 min. You seem to be doing great.

Thank Goodness for these Boards! My first "meals" in the hospital were a full cup of decaf tea for breakfast and a full cup of apple juice (over ice) for lunch. I seemed to sip each sort-of-slowly. No gulps. But when someone asked later it suddenly occured to me I'd done 8 ounces with no pain. On the other hand, the 8 ounces sort-of-filled me and I would have noticed the feeling before having anymore. So, liquids are different than solids, and I'm not already a failure, right?
