Hey Guys, I am one weak out from surgery and doing great, but I just heard that the RNY may cause hormonal changes that decrease cravings and decrease appetite. I was wondering if I should go back on my birth control pills. I was on them for irregular periods, but if they are going to cause my appetite and/or cravings to increase, I will just deal with the irregularity. Does anyone know about this? Please let me know. Well I would talk to your surgeon about that. Mine didn't want us on anything like that. I have a perscription for hormones to get my periods back on track and I haven't started them yet. I was going to call my surgeon and see if he thinks I should. If your worried about sex and getting pregnant using protection is the only option for us but as far as getting your periods back on track you may want to revisit your gyno and see what he/she suggests. Also I know from my experience that my weight played a huge part in messing up my periods. Maybe as you start loosing more weight they will get better. Since surgery I have had mine twice and I am only 4 weeks out. I hope that helps. Shannon

They told me to definently keep on my birth control. It really depends why you are thinking about it. It is important not to get pregnant for at least the 1st year after surgery and it can help regulate your period. Even with the birth control, my period has been wacky from the surgery. I spotted for 15 days. I was told it is just the estrogen that is stored in the fat and as we are breaking down the fat this estrogen is released. I'm on the Nuvaring, but I was told that if I continue to have the spotting and it bothers me to come back in and he will change me to one of the pills. I don't have any cravings or apptitie for that matter after surgery. Brook

My doctor told me that I was not to take my BCPs until at least one month after surgery because of a higher risk of blood clots. I was really worried about that because I haven't been off them in a few years now. But everything really has been OK...no irregularity or mood swings or ravenous hunger. Of course that's just me. I would definitely check with your doc.
