What's the deal with my MOUTH?
Hello!
Okay, this is disgusting! I was awakened out of a deep sleep at about 3 a.m. because of a bad taste in my mouth and horrible breath...yes, it was so terrible it WOKE ME UP! I went into the restroom and brushed my teeth, tongue, roof of my mouth which helped somewhat, and went back to bed. I get up at 8 this morning and it's just as awful...again! This time when I brush my teeth I can actually see (last night I stayed in the dark!) and I've got some kind of tan-ish film all over my mouth.
What the heck is this? I'm in a bit of a panic now because if it's some sort of infection and I continue to swallow, won't it get into my stomach? I'm only 7 days post op today...I don't want to end up really sick. Someone please help! I don't have a fever....would I have to have a fever if it's an infection? Help!

Three possibilities come to my mind...
1) Ketosis: (you are burning fat which gives many people yuk mouth and foul breath) But this is a good thing!! It is made worse post op because you may be doing more mouth breathing from sleeping on your back or due to pain or meds.
2) Protein drinks: I find that these coat my mouth really bad, some brands worse than others. I do better when I cut it with some ice water or crystal light... The clear drinks like Isopure seem to be even worse.
3) Thrush: this is an oral yeast infection. I have read that some people get these post op from all the flora of the mouth being disrupted from surgery and diet changes. This requires medication and a dr visit.
Don't panic, none of these are serious and it will pass! Call the doc to be sure. Just in case your a bit dehydrated, make sure you're getting enough water as well.

I am so glad you brought this up. My breath is just awful. I brush and brush and use those listerine mouth things. I thoughts something was wrong with my teeth because of the lack of food or something. I am not a dentist so I just make things up for myself that seem to work. I am glad i'm not alone but I am still sorry we all have to go through this. Hopefully it ends soon.
Thanks again for bringing it up....
