Surgery Complications.
Here I am post surgery since 9/16/04, has it been only a little over a week? Most of it I can't remember and this is why.
My surgery went rather well with just a little pain but a lot of discomfort with abdomonal bloating. My roommate, Dawn (God Bless you Dawn)seemed to be having more of difficult time than myself and I was praying for her quick recovery. Little did I know what was in store for me.
I wanted to go home early because I hate hospitals so I was rushing myself out of bed, walking around and in spite of the abdominal bloating I thought everything was alright until I felt like I had the runs and I literally ran to the bathroom realized that I was rectally bleeding. In fact, if it hadn't been for my roommate Dawn I would have passed out alone.
I was immediately transfered to TICU. given 6 units of blood, 3 units of plasma and I don't even remember what else since I was semi-conscious and everything seems a haze now. I was told it was a rare occurance. Why did it happen? Even the doctors were puzzled.
Home now I am still extremely weak. I'm pushing myself, perhaps a bit too much, but I'm still on a liquid diet and I don't think that helps either.
Even sitting up to type this on my pc is too much for me. My head is dizzy.
Thank you Dawn, the nurses told me that had you not been there to alarm them something worse could have happened. You truly are my Gardian Angel.
Hi Elizabeth
I had a similar situation when I came home. I felt so full of gas that I felt I had to go to the bathroom with the runs. When I got up from the throne I noticed the toilet was FULL of blood. I called my surgeon and he returned my call within two minutes of leaving a message with his service. He told me that in my case I should not worry and that it was residual blood and it should stop in a couple of days. It has indeed stopped, but boy was I scared. The only thing I can think of is I had my drain removed prior to discharge and maybe it was what was left from the drain or maybe it was an irritated bowel resulting from the surgery. Let me know what you find out. Glad you are ok.

Wow, you poor thing. I am so sorry you had such an awful scare. That god for your room mate. I am glad the bleeding stopped and that you are finally home. I hope you are doing better and feeling better too. Don't forget us here if your having troubles or just need to talk about things. This surgery wasn't simple and sometimes things come up where we think were the only ones. I hope you stay well and it is all smooth sailing from here on out.
