2 weeks post-op and what a hospital story I have
I just had my 2 week post-op visit and had my G-tube removed. I lost 25 lbs I couldn't believe it. I didn't expect to lose quite that much.
Well as far as my hospital stay. My surgery went well. I had a problem with pain control when I first got back to my room (but I had a problem with my last surgery also) however they did change my pain meds and that helped significantly. I was up and walking 3 hours after returning to my room. The nurses were asking me if I was really sure I wanted to walk. I told them yes and was on my way. I walked at least 3x that day.
The next day about noon I was told that they would be evacuating the entire hospital due to hurricane Frances. They took my bed over to the other hospital about 2pm but I did not get transfered until about 10pm in a wheel chair via EMS. That was not a fun ride. Those bumps in the road hurt my left upper abdomen. When I did finally get to my room I had a roommate who was not with it and was complaining that my dad had to leave. So he waited in the waiting room until I got there. (I had some of his meds with my stuff and he had taken over some of my belongings including meds I would need for after the surgery). Anyways the air didn't work very well that night. They didn't bring the overbed trapeaze with them either, it was much harder to get out of bed without it. For the rest of the time they could not figure out my diet and kept bringing me the wrong foods (this hospital does not deal with bariatric patients) and some of the time they forgot to give us food. I was suppose to get 4 meals a day and was lucky to get 3. I had 3 different roommates in 1 day because the 1st lady was losing it mentally and then the 2nd lady was convinced that there was a cold draft comming through the window (which was boarded up, but the wind blowing by the shutters sounded like a blizzard was going on outside) and refused to stay in that room. The doctor wanted to release me early because I was doing so well, but where would I go. There were no hotels available and I wasn't about to go to a shelter and have to try to sleep on the floor. The other option was to drive 3 hours back to my parents house, but the surgeon didn't want that. I was suppose to stay in the area for 10 days following surgery. I convinced them to let me stay in the hospital at least until their usual discharge day (I had already paid for that many days). All in all I survived it!
The nurses came with us when they evacuated everyone and made sure to get things straightened out! My nurses were great! Without them, who knows what kind of hospital stay this would have been!!
Anyone else have a crazy story about their hospital stay?

YOU WIN THE PRIZE!! That is far and away the most crazy hospital stay story I have ever heard of!! I mean, bizarre does not even touch it!
Trapeze!! What a great idea! I did not see any of these while I was in the hospital. I would think it would help alot getting up. My surgery was around 11am, and then there were no rooms on the floor, so I stayed in recovery until about 6pm..........and then it was getting on to shift change, etc, etc...........and nobody got me up the first day This made it even tougher the second day, and contributed to the third spacing fluid retention problem that I had.
Gtube..........for two weeks?? Wow! I did not have one at all, but most of my doc's patients have one for 24 hours. Were you fed through it? What are you eating?
My surgery was the same date as yours...open. I cannot remember if yours was open, lol. I have been having a time with a wound infection, having to pack it twice a day.....and a UTI, darn it all!! But overall, I feel better every day.
Congrats on the 25 lbs!! That is utterly fantastic, and yes I am more than a little jealous!! I am down 18, and pleased....and that is not counting the 13 lbs of fluid I put on overnight after surgery, and have since gotten rid of, thank you Lasix....
I am eating things like mashed pot, tuna, egg salad, pureed frozen Smart Ones meals, protein shakes, yogurt. Wish I had not gone overboard buying all that nectar ahead of time.........all of a sudden it really makes me want to The Unjury unflavored protein powder however is still ok, thank goodness.
Hope things continue to go well for you. Keep us posted, and thanks for sharing your wild ride!
Thanks, sounds like you had a rough ride, but I'm glad to hear that you are feeling better each day. As far as the G-tube goes...they never put anything down it. It was there to release pressure if I needed to (but I didn't) and left in place as a preventative measure. They say most complications accure within the the first 10-14 days. So it is thier policy to keep it in for 14 days. This allows them to put food through it, if you are too nauseas to eat or if you just cannot tolerate any food. You can also give meds through it if needed.
As far as what I am eating. Protien shakes morning and night along with soft foods, protien with 1oz fruit or veggie. Nothing with too much startch. No mashed potatos...not for a long time... like 6 months or so.
But there is a really good cookbook that they have. You can find it at www.baribites.com
Good luck with everything, I hope your wound infection and UTI gets better soon. Oh, and I had a laproscopic RNY. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Wow, that is a crazy amazing story. I am just glad you were with it and able to make sure you got the care you needed. You made sure you got out of bed and that was great. I am so glad you stayed safe through the hurricane and that you didn't have to go out in that crap. I had a roomate who was suffering from cancer through her body and she was loosing it. One minute she was nice and talking to me and the next she was swearing and yelling at the nurses. That really didn't bother me as much as her family. The lady was like 87, and very sick. Well they'd come in at all hours of the day and night. They would tell her things she didn't need to hear. It really was annoying. Not to mention she kpet putting the same channel on and all it showed was the hurricane and the stuff going on in Russia over and over the same thing. I got so aggrivated I had my curtain put around me. I couldn'****ch TV for days because I was so aggrivated.
I am glad your doing good and hope things don't get any crazier for you. WTG on the weight loss. Your doing great.
