HELP!! Dying from the hick-ups
Has anyone heard of, or had to deal with non-stop hick-upping???
I had the surgery monday morning. Since monday evening am non-stop hick-upping. The nurses are trying everything but we can't get them to stop for more than an hour or two. Dr. McDaniel even said I had hick-ups during the surgery.
Any advice???

Hi Lowery,
I hope that by the time you read this post, you won't by hicupping any longer.
I was in the ER last month and overheard a doctor telling a man who had come in because of hiccupping for days that it could be nothing to worry about or a sign of a serious illness. I don't know what this man's outcome was, so I looked up HICCUPPS on WEB MD. Here is what I found:
WHAT CAUSES HICCUPS?
A very full stomach can cause bouts of hiccups that go away on their own. Full stomach can be caused by:
Eating too much too fast.
Drinking too much alcohol.
Swallowing too much air.
Smoking.
Sudden change in stomach temperature, such as drinking a hot beverage and then a cold beverage.
Emotional stress or excitement.
Chronic hiccups last for hours or days, or they recur very often with only a few hours relief between spasms. The persistence of hiccups may indicate a serious illness. Some of the illnesses that include persistent hiccups as a symptom are: pleurisy of the diaphragm, pneumonia, uremia, alcoholism, disorders of the stomach or esophagus, and bowel diseases. Hiccups may also be associated with pancreatitis, pregnancy, bladder irritation, liver cancer or hepatitis. Surgery, tumors, and lesions may also cause persistent hiccups.
Could it be that you were nervous about the surgery?
Maybe during surgery, too much air was left in your stomach?
I hope that you feel better soon.
Take care and God Bless,
Cindy
Wow, that sucks. I hope they're gone by now. Not sure if you had Lap RNY or not but if so maybe the gas they used to blow up the tummy during surgery gave you hiccups. They use to say eat a teaspoon of sugar but that isn't possible now. I have no remedy that actually works so I just wish you the best.

Hi Lowery,
I know this may sound funny for a remedy to hiccups but it has ALWAYS worked for my kids and I. Anyway, you'll need a small glass of water, a small spoon (like the kind you mix coffee or tea with).
STEP#1- place spoon in glass of water so that the spoon faces you when you look into the glass.
STEP#2--begin to drink the water BUT make sure you are looking at the spoon at the bottom of the cup. Focus on that spoon.
STEP#3---Drink the water as quickly as possible (keep in mind it's not a race, lol)
STEP#4----When you have finished the water, your hiccups should be gone.
This has never failed for us. One of my best friends told be about it. She does it with her kids as well. It's like Magic! I would love to know if this works for you so keep me posted. If you have any questions, please e-mail me. Take care.

This also may sound strange but it has always worked for me. My sis-in-law told me to drink from the opposite side of the glass. So, you have the glass and you drink from the back side while the front side is still towards you. Do this over the sink and use a glass with a large top. You will almost be standing on your head by the time you are done and I have no idea how it will work with having a recent surgery, but it does work. However, drinking by looking at a spoon may also work and sounds a lot easier. I've just never tried that one.
