Is it a good investment to buy a recliner to sleep in after lap RNY, or are most people fairly comfortable in bed? Thanks!

If you don't want to buy the recliner you can get a bedrest (you know like you can lean on in bed to watch TV) and pile pillows in front of it to prop you up. I could not lay flat for a few days because it felt like it was stretching too much. I'd hate for you to have to buy a recliner for just a few days unless you really want one. Maybe you could rent one or borrow one from someone.

I had my lap RNY on 09/07/07 and came home on 09/10/04. The first night I slept in my bed propped up on pillows. I found it very hard to lie back, even with the pillows, and my husband helping me, and getting up in the morning was a horror! I found that the main site, on my left, really hurt and burned after I got up in the morning from my bed. I napped for 3 hours in my recliner and did not have nearly as much pain when I got up, so I intend to sleep in my recliner for at least the next 5 or 6 days, maybe longer. I have a close friend who has her surgery date in December and she is going to borrow a recliner from a friend. Also, they are very comfortable to just sit back in. If you do purchase one, make sure that it has an easy mechanism to recline. I think they have ones that work with just a button. Mine is kind of old and has the stick on the side, so I needed help in moving it back. God Bless and God Speed to you on a safe and uneventful surgery. Cindy

Thanks for your replies! I remember after my C-section that I could not lay down and had to sleep in a recliner for quite a while. Just trying to get prepared here as my surgery date approaches. XOXOX "L"

Last night was my first night home. I found that piling pillows on the couch laying in a half sit up lay down postion seemed to work well. I got a good amount of sleep also. Good Luck, Shirley

I had open on the first...assumed the recliner would become my home...and was wrong! I felt like the recliner stretched me out in the middle too much, although it WAS easier to get up. I also felt the recliner sat me way far too back, even with extra pillows. And I have two recliners! Both were not good for me, but I think I am in the minority. So, I opted for the bed...WITH A ZILLION PILLOWS! It was as if I were semi sitting up at about 45 degree angle, and then I put a pile of two pillows under my knees.....and that was the best sleep ever! Every couple of nights I take one pillow away, lol...........down to 5 last night!!

Hi Shirley! Glad you are home and recovering. Thanks for the reply. I am trying to get prepared here....8 days is not far away at all! Louisa, you sound like my sister. She had a different kind of surgery a few years ago and she still goes to bed with a pile of pillows! I sleep with a pillow between my legs now...by the time I get home from surgery, I will probably have so many pillows in bed that my hubby will move to a guest room! LOL Thanks for your replies! "L"
