Most WLS docs will tell you to wait until you have reached your goal and stablized before PS. You will not be as happy with the results & then will have to redo it & since insurance will only pay once (if at all) you would have to self pay & it ain't cheap !
Topic: Expectations vs. Reality
I'm developing a theory! WLS works a while & then it works when you work it. I'm 9-4-2003 RNY, 5'2" & have lost 38 pounds in nearly 7 months. Nov.=4 lbs.; Dec.=4 lbs.; Jan.=-0-; Feb.=+1 LB. GAIN; Mar.=2 lbs. This with me doing everything possible right. I wear 14-16 and need to lose 55 lbs. for 25% BMI.
On the other hand, my health is FINE compared to before WLS. I expect to stop BP pills before much longer. I took 9 RXs & 2 over-the-counter pills daily & lived in a mental fog & in physical bowel incontinence/TIAs. This is ended.
Yes, I'm embarrassed at support meetings when others with surgery after mine have lost over 100 lbs. AND ARE NOW SLIM - but what good does that do? If they'd gained 100 lbs., it wouldn't help me lose one ounce - so what's the point of comparing myself with others? I just suck it up & hope to hear a helpful tip when I go.
Now you'd think I'd be exercising like an athlete, but I need more encouragement and wisdom and discipline here! HELP!
Topic: Another Week, Another 2 Pounds
Hi Everyone:
Its been 28 weeks since my surgery and to say the least I am more than satisified with my progress. I lost another 2 pounds this week making my total loss 158 pounds. I now weigh 215 which is 10 pounds below my high school playing weight and is my lowest weight since 1974.
I continue to workout 3 times a week lifting weights and doing cardio.
Before anyone asks, here are the answers to some questions:
1) Yes I am eating. I just make sure that everything I eat is allowing me to get in my protein. I get in the area of 80-100 grams daily.
2) Yes I'm drinking plenty of water. At least 96 oz. a day.
3) I take my vitamins twice daily.
My main goal now is to continue what I'm doing and enjoying my new life.
A tip to all. Focus on the positive aspects of life and look forward to how your life will improve as a result of WLS. If you look for things to go wrong, they will. If you look for things to go right, beleive me they will.
Till next time,
Jesse

Topic: RE: 6mo. out and plain ole disgusted!
Hi Carol,
I had my surgery on September 8th. I began at 250 and now weigh 172. I remember going to my first appointment after my surgery. There were two other ladies who had the surgery the same day, we called ourselves "the triplets", and they were both there that day. It was like a mini reunion. Well I was first and I lost 20 pounds and they both lost over 30 pounds. I was so discouraged and called up my sister-in-law who had had the surgery 10 months earlier. She assured me that 20 pounds was still very good and that it is important to always remember that people are different. Because our weights are not way over like some of the other people our weight loss might not be as fast as others who started out larger. I look at it this way, I once lost 50 pounds in my life but it took me 2 years to do it, so it is a blessing to have lost 78 pounds in 6 months. And even though there may be hanging skin, that's just cosmetic, you weigh less and are much healthier now. I have been a little slow losing weight recently, but I am still 5 dress sizes and 55 inches smaller than I started and so when I get discouraged I try and remember that. If it makes you feel any better my doctor told me that I was 15 pounds ahead of schedule so he would probably be very impressed with a 90 pound weight loss and I can't wait to be at 90 pounds. I say congratulations you're doing great!

Darlene, Congrats on your weight loss, that is awsome!! I am at 107 pounds loss so far and I have lots of excess skin also but I think I need to lose more before plastics. How does one know when it is time to start the plastics process? Are you now at goal? Good luck!!

Topic: RE: 6mo. out and plain ole disgusted!
Hmmm... I see that this is a normal thing... I started out around 270 and planned on losing 100 lbs. Since surgery my weight has been coming off several pounds a week. Kind of like someone pulled the plug on the fat drain. I lost about 75 pounds... up until Feb 11th. Then all of a sudden it stopped! I haven't lost a freaking ounce since then! Wow! Now I know what a plateau is. It can be discouraging, until we look back at some old photos and remember how we used to feel. I may be stuck at losing only 75% of my over-weight. But, that's not too bad. I know that I am much healthier and my clothes fit better than they have since high school.
I will just weight and see!
Tom

Hey Carol,
Keep your chin up! We all feel disgusted from time to time. I look at it this way...If I didn't have the surgery, where would I be today? I'm sure it would be alot higher than what I weighed the day of my surgery. I know that I was feeling the EXACT same way as you...but reading everyone elses posts really helped. And...whoever said it was right...We all (or at least most of us) have a silly notion in our head that we should be down at least 100 lbs by 6 months, but were we ever told that by our surgeons? I know I was not...but I put that pressure on myself anyway. Go figure. I guess I still have the old habit of trying to set myself up for failure. I know that I now want to concentrate on exercise and yes, drinking my water...I have been slacking on both. BUT...boy it sure is great to talk to and know that there are others out there that feel the same way as I do from time to time. WE WILL SUCCEED!!!!

Carol, I am six months out today. I am down 72 pds, started 229 at surgery. I have slowed down for the last 2 months, the scale fluxuates continuously, I joined curves and drinking more water it seems to help. I think it helps with my mental attitude. I want the weight off faster also, but this is a journey so hang on tight and get out in the air away from people and food. I pray all picks up for you.
