Topic: RE: help
My surgeon and his partners generally aren't huge fans of protein shakes as supplements; the shakes cost money and calories, when not used as meal replacements.
I feel similarly disinclined toward protein shakes, though I'm reacting largely to the taste of them. Even the best shakes pre-mixed or mixed with ice and milk in a blender at home just aren't going to get my tastebuds going.
But, I've found it pretty easy to get in my required daily protein simply from food (admittedly, my surgery was five weeks ago, on Sept. 9, and I seem to be tolerating food fairly easily). My nutritionist and doc want their patients to get in at least 40 but ideally no less than 50 grams of protein a day.
A hamburge, tuna patty or a 2-3 egg white omelet with cheese for breakfast gives you 15-20 grams of protein. Yogurt and two light string cheeses for lunch and a protein snack hook you up with another 15 or so grams, depending on the brand and quantity of yogurt consumed. If you have another dose of protein for dinner - chicken, meatloaf, fish, chicken salad, egg salad, beans - you can easily score another 15 grams.
Now, again, I should say, I'm tolerating a significant amount and variety of foods. And, I wasn't getting in all my protein every day my first few weeks post-op. Then, I was trying to use milk and protein drinks to help me meet that goal, but I still frequently fell just a little short. (BTW, I believe an 8-ounce glass of skim milk has about 8 grams of protein). In some time, as you tolerate more food, you might be able to ditch the protein shakes altogether, and trade the stuff for a protein-laden eating plan.
Good luck!
Topic: RE: Anybody go to BTC
Judie,
I also went to BTC. I had my surgery on 9/29 in Pennsylvania. I'm on pureed food right now. I've only had the mashed potatoes and the chicken salad. I tried an egg, but it made me feel sick. They told me that it could happen and to try again in a few weeks. Have you tried any of the other recipes? I've seen people on here saying they've had Wendy's Chili. I'm sort of afraid to try it. Keep doing well.

Topic: 3 Weeks Postop
I had my surgery on Sept. 29 at the Bariatric Treatment Center in PA. Everything went great! I haven't had any problems. My surgery weight was 345lbs and am now down 24lbs!!! I was most concerned about pain before my surgery. I have to say it really wasn't that bad (and I'm a big baby!!). The soreness lasts for a little while, but it gets better every day. At 3 weeks, the soreness is almost gone. The hardest part is not being about to eat for almost 3 weeks. I started pureed food on Saturday. I get a little nauseas (sp?) now and then, but it goes away. It just feels good to be able to eat again.

My lap RNY was 9/9/03, and so far, I've easily tolerated:
Fake crab cakes made with canned tuna
Tuna burgers
Homemade hamburgers with 92 percent lean ground beef
Chili with cheese and low-fat sour cream
Scrambled eggs (omelets) with cheese
A slice of fat-free bologna and a slice of American cheese rolled up
Sugar-free peanut butter cookies
Low-fat peanut butter and sugar-free strawberry jelly
Chicken salad
Ham salad
Mashed potatoes
Refried beans with cheddar and low-fat sour cream
Sushi (I don't eat the rice, so, really, it's just raw fish)
Dole, Popsicle brand and Welch's sugar-free popsicles
Tons of soups (chicken noodle, miso, cream of mushroom and more)
A slice of roast beef with a little cheese (either low-fat cheddar or a little melted Brie) rolled up
I've also had some Lean Cuisine frozen meals (Thai-style chicken and a salisbury steak-like meal). Initially, these went down easy, but my first experience vomiting was with one of these, even though I'd tolerated the same meal before. Maybe I was too ****y and eating too fast. Maybe I didn't chew thoroughly enough. Regardless of the reason, I'm reluctant to try again (though I will eventually).
While early in my soft-foods stage (which my doc and nutritionist set for three weeks after surgery, if the patient is tolerating everything okay), I actually had a few meals of chicken nuggets from McDonalds. I'd order a pack of four and eat three or four of them, always chewing thoroughly. I'm over that craving now, which is a good thing.
I've also had shrimp with ****tail sauce a few times. While I agree with many other post-ops who say it goes down well, I find it loses a lot of appeal after you've chewed a bite of shrimp until it's pureed in your mouth!
I actually had a wedge of toast with soup one day, and I tolerated it fine. I've also eaten a few noodles from the shells and cheese side of the Lean Cuisines meal with no problems. But then, I chewed like a mad woman, and I only had about three or four noodles.

Topic: RE: 3 weeks later down 38 lbs
Hi Judy,
I had my surgery 9/3/03. I am down 32 pounds. I started out 303/271 and I am now at 271. Some days I have to make myself eat as well. In regards to the living and learning, this is so true. I upchucked yesterday. I chewed something too fast. I love it because the "pouchie" will let us know if we are doing something right or wrong. Keep up the good work.
Topic: RE: Inpatient with weight lost
28 lbs is a lot in 3 1/2 weeks is actually very good for lap band and for having a lower BMI than many. I had RNY about the same time and have only lost about 16-18 lbs. As long as you're following your dr.'s advice/plan, you will be fine and much healther. A couple days I went off "plan" and ended up losing weight faster, but I also got really sick. I, too, am very impatient, but when you end up being too weak to get out of bed or take your child to school (and watch their tears), it's worth taking the slower, healthier way. I hope this helps and keep up the good work.

I am four weeks post-op and would like some ideas as to which whole foods people are eating. I am eating yogurt, protein shakes, mashed potatoes, Wendy's chili and popscicles. I need some more variety. Help! 49 lb. loss in three weeks. Will weigh at my fifth week post-op.
Topic: Inpatient with weight lost
I am 3 1/2 weeks out and lost 28 pounds from the adjustable gastric banding. Most of the weight lost occured when I was on clear liquids, Now that I am eating food (Following Atkin's Plan), I have only lost 2 pounds in the last 10 days. I am affraid that only while on protein shakes and clear liquids will I obtain my goal. This is not realistic to me. Have other people notice a decline in weight lost with the addition of food. Also, I am walking 1 1/2 miles 3 times a week. Is this enough?
Topic: RE: 4 1/2 weeks out - hitting a depressing stage
I am 16 days out and understand how you feel. Just list the improvements in your life since the surgery and know there will be more rewards to come. I have trouble doing the walking because of my lung problems. My doctor even advised me to stop walking when my breathing became labored. Do not worry about being grumpy. Your honesty will help everyone because we have the same thoughts and concerns. Your honesty allows us to know others feel the same way. God Bless Cindy

Tammy keep in mind the positives. You got the surgery done. You are on your way to success. It will not happen overnight and everyones body is on a different time scale. At the end of the day focus on something positive in your recovery like I did not overeat today, no nausea, I exercised more than the previous day etc. I believe in you.
