Can anyone offer me some tips on how to handle hair loss. I am 4 months post-Op and my hair is falling out in handfuls. I read in the preliminary materials, as I was waiting for Insurance approval. But after the surgery, I lost the packet that offers suggestions on what to do. I need to know how to slow or stop the process.

Connie, Same here, 4 months post and losing hair. Luckily its all over and not in certain spots. Not a whole lot we can do about it. They say to keep your protien up and some say shampoos like Rogaine and Nioxin works....most will just say time. It slacks off somewhere around 6-8 months out I believe. I have heard alot of people say that they cut theirs short to keep it from being so obvious. I have just went with the flow. If I am really selfconcious one day I will wear a ball cap. Most of the time though, I just play with my style and it helps. Small price to pay for the weight loss! I also have a head full.......rather I did lol. So having thick hair has helped alot! Mine is short/med. I am looking forward to getting a super short chic cut in the next month for summer...wanted a few more lbs gone though. Anyway, Good luck and dont worry, Ive heard it comes back healthier and thicker! Huggers! Carol 9-22-03 lap rny 258/178/110

Connie, I am 4 months post-op also and my hair is falling out. I went to the beauty shop and she told me to take these special vitamins for hair and nails. I believe that it is called Nioxin. Anyway, I have taken them for two days. No side effects as of yet but my hair is still coming out. I know it will take longer to take effect, but I am not patient. Anyway, When I went to Vitamin World, I was talking to the salesperson and he said that I was on the right track. So, We'll see... I'll let you know the progress.

Maybe it's just me, but I've not had any hair loss. Don't know that I'm doing anything different than any one else.

Hi Connie, I'm also 4 mos post op and losing hair. I spoke with the nutritionist and p/a at my surgeons office and they told me to just keep up the protien and vitamins and be patient. Most pills and shampoos don't work (it's just alot of hype like the diet programs we know so well). My 2 friends both lost alot of hair but by 6 months it had started to regrow (thicker). Having a shorter style does make it a little less noticable. Good luck and be patient. Carol Card

Hey there -- did that, done that... Am also 4 mos post-op, and it's a relief to read how many of you have had the same problem. I also cut my hair shorter and started increasing my protein and vitamins. Lately, I've noticed the hair loss has slacked off considerably, so I'm thinking by Spring we'll all of us be walking bomb shells!!!! Don't ya think?

Hi Connie, I, too, am 4mos. post-op. I am getting thinner on top but haven't seen any hair come out by the handfuls. I also increased my protein and vitamin intake. Hopefully this will slow down the hair loss. I heard that this will pass by 6-8mos postop. I only hope that my hair will last that long.

You can try Biotin. I take 2000mcg per day.I don't know if it really helps or not but that is what the doc recomended. Mine has just started & I cried too. But I am told it is a side effect of the anesthesia and it is just temporary. I frosted mine a few weeks ago so if I did start to thin it wouldn't be as noticeable. You have to find what works for you to deal . Can't wait for it to stop & come back in. I am lucky to have thick hair to start with.

Hi Connie, I am also 4 mos. post and my hair has been falling out in record speed for the past 2 months. I was told by my surgeon that it is an misunderstood phenomenon and will stop around 6 months postop. Seems to me that the amount of proteins eaten plus the anesthesia might have something to do with it. I truly think it's the lack of absorption of what we eat rather than the amounts of this or that as well as the rapid weight loss. I was on a liquid fasting diet several years ago and the same thing happened. It started to regrow around the 6-8 month during that diet. I saw little hairs on my head and couldn't believe it! It looked like baby hair. So while I'm not happy as my hair was thin on top to begin with, I know it's temporary.
