I have been reading some profiles, and I dont understand how some people can drink 8oz protein shakes. I can barely manage 4 ounces, and I have to force myself to do that. I am so oworried that I wont be getting enough protein. please help if you can.

My dr/nutrionist do not psu the protien shakes - they know how nasty they are. I guess some brands are better than others but whose up running around buying 20 kinds! I am to drink 24 oz of skim or 1% milk a day. Today was my first and I started with 8oz of diet hot chocolate. There is a protien drink out that already mixed call EDGE. I heard it is really good. I bought a 4 pack to have on hand if I really needed it or was out of milk - it can go in the cupboard. Haven't tried it though. I wouldn't worry too much though as you will be starting on soft foods soon and will be able to get more protein then. Hope this helps Rena

Hello! I am having a difficult time with the protein shakes. My nutritionist here suggested Boost Breeze. It is great. Try it!

My surgeon and his partners generally aren't huge fans of protein shakes as supplements; the shakes cost money and calories, when not used as meal replacements. I feel similarly disinclined toward protein shakes, though I'm reacting largely to the taste of them. Even the best shakes pre-mixed or mixed with ice and milk in a blender at home just aren't going to get my tastebuds going. But, I've found it pretty easy to get in my required daily protein simply from food (admittedly, my surgery was five weeks ago, on Sept. 9, and I seem to be tolerating food fairly easily). My nutritionist and doc want their patients to get in at least 40 but ideally no less than 50 grams of protein a day. A hamburge, tuna patty or a 2-3 egg white omelet with cheese for breakfast gives you 15-20 grams of protein. Yogurt and two light string cheeses for lunch and a protein snack hook you up with another 15 or so grams, depending on the brand and quantity of yogurt consumed. If you have another dose of protein for dinner - chicken, meatloaf, fish, chicken salad, egg salad, beans - you can easily score another 15 grams. Now, again, I should say, I'm tolerating a significant amount and variety of foods. And, I wasn't getting in all my protein every day my first few weeks post-op. Then, I was trying to use milk and protein drinks to help me meet that goal, but I still frequently fell just a little short. (BTW, I believe an 8-ounce glass of skim milk has about 8 grams of protein). In some time, as you tolerate more food, you might be able to ditch the protein shakes altogether, and trade the stuff for a protein-laden eating plan. Good luck!
