 Hi Sheila,

Thank you very much for your reply. Makes perfect sense.  I am going to leave it a week or two and then decide.  What I might do is tell a few close work colleagues, it is then bound to get out to more people anyway.  Will just take each day as it comes. After all, like you, I dont really care what everyone else thinks, this is for me and my family.

Just wanted to say I hope you are feeling better.  I will be a month out tomorrow and most of my experience has been great.  There are those times when i eat something that doesn't agree with me.

That is a very personal decision and I think everyone has to make it for themselves.   I personally told everyone.   I thought they would figure it out once I came back anyway and this gave me the chance to put my input out there.. I was doing this for my health and for my children.  Most everyone was supportive.   For the ones who weren't I gave it a quick shot to help them understand (most were just afraid of the horror stories they had heard) and for the ones who chose to talk badly about me behind my back??? I didn't and don't waste my time with them.  I know I did what I needed to do for my children... were they going to raise them if I had a fatal heart attack?  Good luck in what you decide.   Just remember the only ones *****ally count are your family and the ones who are willing to support you.

Topic: Should I tell people at work about my operation?
Hi.  I did not tell people at work what operation I was going for. I was too embaressed and did not want to draw too much attention to myself. Also thought that it would just encourage people to gossip and talk about it.  I have a lot of support at home and personal friends.  Problem is that I am running out of excuses to not attend work social functions, celebrations etc.  Someone insisted on having lunch with me this week as a meeting ran late and she was starving.  I went into a total panic that there may not be soup on the menu and felt really self conscious throughout as I had to eat my soup so slow.

I have a senior job in a large company.  With the global credit crisis and state of the world economy, everyone is trying to climb over each other  and put colleagues down to survive (not me!)

Should I tell some people at work or should I keep going as things will improve much more over next couple of months to make my operation less obvious?  Please help, your views much appreciated.

 Hi Lisa,

I was quite excited to have found someone that had their VSG on the same day as me!
I am starting to feel better and better each day.  Have you started exercising? I have waited until now because I was getting so very tired all the time.  Going to try and get going this week. Getting to know my body more now, when to stop, what food makes me feel unwell etc

I did not tell anyone at work what operation I had, still undecided on whether or not that was the right thing to do as I have lots of support at home and with friends but nothing when I am at work.  Really avoiding social gatherings and celebrations at work, running out of excuses not to attend.  In restaurants, I feel embaressed as they always ask if there was something wrong with the food, but obviously I just cannot eat much now.  Eating with work colleagues is also difficult, I take so long and go into a total panic if they dont have soup on the menu.

Do you think I should speak to a few people at work openly about it or keep going as in 2-3 months, things will be much easier anyway?

Hi.  It has been 6 weeks since my operation.  I totally know how you feel, it was exactly the same for me.  The doctor said all along that I will be fine to go back to work 2 weeks after the op.  And true to a certain extent but for at least the first 4 to 5 weeks, I was feeling exhausted and tired a lot of the time. I would have short bursts of energy and then feel so very week and tired afterwards.  Things do get better slowly though.  Even now at 6 weeks, I still have some days where I am need to rest for couple of hours.  Fortunately my job does not require much physical work, but even the travelling gets to me.  Once I am there and on the computer, I tend to be fine.  I was not originally taking much note of avoiding the 'dumping syndrome', thought it meant predominantly diarhoea. I then realised that feeling so weak after eating is also part of the dumping syndrome.  This is caused by eating too fast, drinking to close before or after eating etc.  Hope this helps x
