HEY LADIES!  How are you all doing?  WHY have we lost touch?  I will fess up...gaining a lil.  Staying at around 143 now.  I am working full time, and have stopped exercising so much.  I think that is what is doing it.  No more size 4 for me...in 6 now.  I am going to nip this in the bud before it gets further.  ARE YOU staying off of here because you have gained to?  COME ON.  We are all in the same boat.  I need all of you!  I miss you.  Let us continue this journey together.  My Dr.'s nurse told me at two years out it is very normal to start gaining some back.  Well, not me.    Please keep in touch...Much love and hugs to all of you :)

Topic: bone density
HI Everyone,

I recently had a bone density done and it shows that I have lost 8% of my bone density in the last year.  My vitamin D level was also a little low.  I have increased the amount of calcium and vit D I take.  I am also walking more.  Anyone else have this problem so far?

I hope everyone is doing well.

Topic: RE: help how much should i be eating
The only trouble I really have with eating is that I don't chew enough or I take a bite to big and then get sick.  I do snack sometimes, but I try to be careful and keep it healthy, like fruit, or wheat crackers or something like that.  I don't count my calories but if I did I would guess I eat less than 1200 a day.  I eat a simple breakfast (oatmeal, farina wheat cereal or sometimes toasted wheat bread with sf jelly or cream cheese), lunch is usually part of a canned soup (cream of mushroom or cream of celery) or a lunchable (the ones that come with 8 crackers, cheese, meat) I can eat most of this but not all 8.

Lunch is normal, meat, side and veggies.  I bake almost everything or pan fry meat in a skillet with a light coat of non stick olive oil spray.  I season my meat myself, instead of pre-mixed seasonings that are most often full of salt.  If I make french fries or any other potatoe thing I will bake instead of deep fry.  I cook for myself and my partner, so sometimes he wants fried catfish and onion rings or something else I shouldn't eat so I will have a salad if I make something special for him.

Hi Kathleen,  I had a pretty good mothers day.   I celebrated with my kids on the Saturday and on the Sunday I went to see my Mom.  She's in her eighties but still doing quite well thankfully.  I hope everything is well with you.  I'm glad to see that you still check in here.  It's good to hear how everyone is doing.  Fran

Hi Theresa,  I have been having trouble with eating all the time too.  So far I have managed to stay at about the same weight but I can see it creeping up if I continue with these bad habits.  I eat at least 1700-1800 calories a day and on bad days I eat even more.  Sometimes I wonder if my pouch really is small or have I totally stretched it, then sometimes I can hardly eat anything (thankfully).  I have also found that I have sugar cravings quite often.  If I eat too much sweet stuff though I do feel quite ill afterwards.  I'm not sure how much the bypassed section of intestine is helping with decreased absorbtion but it must be some or I am sure I would have put on more weight by now.  I am thinking of doing the 5 day pouch test but I haven't had the motivation yet.  I still exercise most days, and I never drink and eat together.  I start every day with new resolve but sometime through the day it seems to just disappear.  Are you at least staying steady with your weight?  Are there any strategies you have tried so far that have helped a little?  Do you still eat any protein supplements or at least protein first?  I hope you find the answer for you and if you do don't forget to share it!

Hi Theresa!  I am almost at two years out too.  I am able to eat alot more, all of a sudden, in these last two months.  Luckily, I keep my weight at around 135-140.  It is not easy...I really have to be disciplined, walk alot, and watch totally what I am doing.  I REFUSE to let myself gain back.  I realize a few pounds is inevitable, but I cannot fathom getting above 150 ever again.  I am really really short, only 5'1", so I need to be smaller.  I have been told it is very normal at about two years out to eat more, and gain some back.  Our pouches are somewhat stretched and relaxed.  There is the five day pouch test, which I use sometimes.  It works.  Remember this surgery is just a tool, not a fix all, so use your tool.  You can do this!  One minute at a time.  I chew alot of gum, drink alot of water, and exercise every day.  Best of luck to you and remember you are not alone!

Topic: RE: And the struggle goes on...
Hi Kathleen and Brenda,  Kathleen...I know exactly how you feel.  I live in fear of the weight gain and I can see that I have to work to control my old habits...I know they are all still there lurking under the surface.  I have picked a weight that I hope never to go over.  I fluctuate up and down a few pounds.  The one way I have changed is that I refuse to think I have failed if I make one ( or even more) bad choises.  I try to make good choises again at the next meal or snack.   I have to admit that even though I am doing more exercise than I did before I still am not a regular at the gym.  Like Brenda I try to walk more and take the stairs when I can.  I haven't done the 5 day pouch test since I was about 8 months out or so...I had no problem then but I might have a bit of a problem now.  I think I am still carb addicted.  Maybe we should start weighing in again, or logging what we eat or do the 5 day pouch test together.  If there is anything I can do to help let me know.  Fran

Hi Kathleen! Hi everyone!  It's been quite awhile since I've posted.  Been tooooo pushed this semester time-wise. It's funny to think two years ago at this time I'd have NEVER dreamed of doing what I'm doing now! I'm loving my new life!

I'm keeping steady and paying attention to what I eat and when I eat it.  I do eat sweets or crackers, but I pay close attention to how much and make a conscious choice to eat what I'm eating and not let it become an automated (so to speak) reaction or habit.  My nurse told me, "it's not logical or healthy to think you're never going to let yourself enjoy a favorite treat or meal again  your whole life. Just do it with much more caution and awareness than you did before." She's such a wise woman, and she knows exactly what we're all going through, she had gastric bypass also.

Are you attending support group meetings? It's soooooo important to keep up some sort of support besides family.  People who KNOW what we're going through, who know what we face, who CARE because they've been there.  I can't say enough how important these meetings are to me.

I have gained the occasional pound here and there, but I pay close attention to what it was I did differently and I step back to the basics and do the 5 day pouch test occasionally as a reminder and as a carb cleaner.  It's amazing how that works! I am at my lowest weight since I can't remember when.  I'm weighing between 134 and 136 all the time now.

I don't get enough exercise, and I miss it. I just flat do NOT have time between schooling fulltime and working fulltime, homework, tests, sleep, etc to get exercise in like I should.  I do still do all the little things that add up to more physical activity--parking in the farthest parking spot away from the entrance, making one job into three or four (up and down the hallway at my job, not taking the telephone with me all over the house, etc). I also do more stairs (not too many in our small town--not too many two story buildings, LOL) whenever I get the chance. It's not all the exercise I need, but it's better than I used to do. I do know that I'm more committed to my health than I've ever been and that alone feels wonderful.

There is no reason we can't all be successful in our new lives!  To those struggling with snacking, carbs, etc....talk to your doctor about appetite suppressants.  It's NOT a sign of failure, it's asking for that added boost to get you through some tough times and to help get you back off of carbs.  This is your health! If you had a horrible disease and felt bad, would you struggle with it or would you ask for help?  This is the SAME thing in asking for help in your weight loss journey. Do NOT be afraid to ask for help. It's there if you need it.

I'm so proud of all of us! We've come a longggg way, baby! The worst worst worst thing we can do to ourselves now is to step back into our old, nasty worn out stinky shoes of beating ourselves up for our past weight management failure!!! We are NOT those people anymore--we have to rein our thoughts back in and remember the journey--it's lifelong.

Here is the 5 day pouch test link...give it a try..it's awesome!  http://www.5daypouchtest.com/

God bless you ALL! I love you with my whole heart!

Brenda
