Hi Holly!
I had gastric bypass on August 2nd and had the same problem as you with hunger. My surgeon and nurse educator both told me to eat (er...uh...drink) about a 1/4 of a cup since liquid passes through so quickly. And to keep the fluids going between meals. Don't doubt yourself! Your body just went through a HUGE change. I know it's so easy to step into the "beating oneself up" mode, cuz as overweight people we have probably always tended to do that, but DON'T. You took steps to change your life for good. Take it easy on yourself, you're only a few days out from surgery. I'll be your cheering section if you want!
You said you'll be going on pureed foods in two weeks? Wow! I had to do the full liquid diet (puddings, creamed soups, etc) for only a week, then on to pureed foods. I'm on pureed foods until this coming Tuesday (the 28th) then I start the soft foods phase. I'm a lil nervous about that since I've been having trouble keeping things down. It's possible that I'm developing a stricture :-(. I'm hoping not, but gonna be checked out soon for that. Other than that, I feel GREAT!
If you're suffering any nausea like I did, it was caused by milk products. After surgery many many people become lactose intolerant. If you're suffering from nausea, try stopping the milk products and see if that helps. I stopped mixing my protein drinks with milk and the nausea was gone immediately.
I hope I've helped you through my own experience! Please keep in touch! I wish you the best, most speedy and successful journey!!
God bless you!!

Brenda,
Thank you for the support and advice. How are you doing emotionally and mentally?
I'm excited and very nervous. I'm a self pay so I am praying for no complications. I can't afford it.
God Bless you too!

Topic: RE: Three weeks post-op...having frustrations..helpppp
Hi Kim!
I was hungry the day after surgery. I have had no reprieve in the hunger department. LOL. I've just learned to deal with it until it's mealtime or protein drink time. Misty (bariatric nurse educator) has just said that everyone is different and that different people will feel differently after surgery. I know there are several people I know that told me that they weren't hungry at all for the first several weeks. I think they all lied to me LOLOL! I think I'm probably going to be having a dilation of my anastimosis (spelling?)--the opening at the bottom of the pouch. I'm having serious trouble keeping food down. It's not nausea that's causing me to lose most all I eat. It feels like it's stuck in my chest or throat. I feel the need to burp, but when I try to burp all my food comes up with it. That indicates that my opening isn't big enough to let food pass through it and needs to be dilated. Not looking forward to that for sure! But if it makes this better, it's well worth it!
I'm glad you're doing well! I'll keep you in my prayers for a speedy and successful journey into thinness! I can't wait to reach that goal myself!
God bless you!

Topic: BCBS-basic vs standard
Starting Sept 1st I will be cover by BCBS for fed employees, but I am having a hard time choosing between the basic plan and the standard plan. I was told the only REAL difference is that one has a deductible and allows you to go out of network (with less beneifts coverage of course). Either way I was told they both cover the surgery and have the same requirements. I basically want to choose the one that will give me more bang for my buck and would cost me less out of pocket when it comes to bariatric surgery. Does anyone have suggestions or know first hand of the financial difference? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi bren,
I feel hungry too!! I'm 2 weeks post op... and although the hunger pangs aren't as strong as they used to be, I still have them!! Did your nurse explain why some of us feel hunger, and others don't? I wasn't hungry at all during my first week!!
best wishes,
kimm

Topic: I AM HOME AND DOING FABULOUS!!!
I am so sorry that I have not gotten onto the computer hardly at all since I arrived home from the hospital a week ago tomorrow. Even though everything went nearly textbook, I spent 5 days in the hospital. That's a little longer than average for the lap RNY surgery that I had but my darn bladder didn't want to start working again so my surgeon kept me till it stopped being so lazy. When I had a hysterectomy my bladder did the same thing.
My Mom is here from NY and we have been very busy. I have several personal messages here on OH and in email that I have just not had the time to read. My Mom will be here till Tuesday so I imagine after she leaves I'll be able to get on here more and check on my fellow August surgery friends. I have been thinking of all of you and praying that those who had surgery already, that it went as well as mine and for those upcoming it will go as well too.
I can't even tell you how well I'm doing... it's absolutely amazing. My Mom and I started walking a mile every morning and every evening the day after I got home from the hospital. Today we went out on our friends pontoon boat for the entire day and I felt fine even with climbing on and off the boat. Just miraculous to me.
I will not have time to really read and post here till after Mom leaves so I invite you all to take a look at my blog to see how wonderful things went. I am in NO pain and never was from the time I came home from the hospital. The staples tug a little now and then when I move certain ways but it is minimal.
Ok... I've already spent too much time on the computer but really have been longing to get in here and am sneaking in for a few minutes only to post to let everyone know how wonderful I did.
My prayers that ALL of us do this well!
Hugs,
Marianne C.

Vicky, Donna and LaVonn,
I will be praying for all of you continually that your surgeries are successful and without complication. I had my surgery on August 2nd--three weeks ago today! I'm doing pretty good for the most part. I had almost NO pain. The most I had was soreness related to the incisions. I really felt no serious pain at all. I hope all three of you have pain-free surgeries also!! If I might throw out a little advice-- follow the post-op diet exactly and don't vary from it. It makes recuperation and the whole process sooooo much easier.
I know you'll all do GREAT!!
Praying for you all, God bless you!
Brenda :-)
