Anyone having dumping problems
Hey everyone
I had my surgery 8/6 and for a while I was doing really well with most foods even lean beef.
The last two weeks I have been dumping. i tried a chicken salad from McD's had 3 bites and dumped 1/2 hour later. I had another chicken salad with ff dressing and dumped again. Then I had shrimp 2 small and dumped again. It seems like everything is upsetting my stomach.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do after dumping to help your stomach feel better.
Thanks
Trish
If that's weird Heidi then I'm weird too! LOL If I don't chew everything to smithereens and wait a minute at least between bites then I end up vomiting as well. I don't consider vomiting dumping. I do get the foamies though which is usually my signal that I'm going to need to vomit. I always feel 100% better once I've vomited something that I have eaten too fast or not chewed well enough. I also have to eat VERY small amounts or I will lose it all then as well. I've gotten pretty good last couple weeks though. I have only vomited once in 2 weeks and I think it's because I'm finally getting it through my brain that I have to eat ridiculously slow and chew chew chew. Also..when I do that little hiccup/burp thing, it's my signal that my pouch doesn't want any more food... EVEN IF I've only taken a couple bites.

If you mean that you vomit, that's not dumping.
Dumping syndrome is usually caused by sugar or fat. It is when your food dumps from your pouch into your small intestine quickly. Symptoms include sweating, accelerated heart rate and intestinal pain.
If this is what you mean, it is probably from the Fat Free Dressing. Fat Free Dressing = high sugar. In fact, if you look at the label, it has High Fructose Corn Syrup, which is the worst kind of sugar!!! You should get reduced fat, not fat free products.
I disagree.
One of the symptoms of dumping is nausea, which in my case leads me to vomit up my meals (3 times since my surgery, although 2 of those times were in 1 day - so that might have just been a bad day).
I have not experienced late dumping yet (the dumping that occurs 1 to 2 hours after meals that is usually due to a hypoglycemic episode). However, as I said earlier, 3 times now I have had IMMEDIATE dumping after I ate.
I finished eating, sat back to talk to my kids and in approximately 3 - 5 minutes, I literally felt like I was going to fall over in a dead faint. This was accompanied by EXTREME nausea. All 3 times, I went directly to the bathroom and vomited up my meals. Within 10 minutes after vomiting each time, I felt better.
I am glad this has only happened 3 times. (I did vomit a TINY bit of an egg when I was about a month out, but that wasn't dumping - that was just not sitting well with me.) Other than that, it has been smooth sailing.
To the original poster...
In my case, I've learned that it is important when you're dumping on something you shouldn't to look at your condiments. (Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, BBQ sauce, etc.) Sometimes, different brands have different amounts of sugar in them. I love BBQ and have eaten it several times since my RNY. However, one of the times I early dumped (on that day when I dumped 2 times) was on BBQ beef. It was a different kind of BBQ sauce that had a little more sugar in it than what the others I had eaten had. FYI: If you have trouble with dumping, it is better to try to get SUGAR FREE products than FAT FREE products.
Also, look at how "greasy" something is. In my case, I've learned that I can tolerate some things that some places cook (eating out) and not tolerate the exact same dish at a different place (eating out). Some places just cook things "greasier" than other places. Some places also put butter or oil glazes on baked items to make them look juicier (not so dry) without telling you or including it on the menu.
I hope this helps.
I agree, Wendy. I've had nausea and vomitting with the dumping syndrome. The time I dumped in a major fashion, I had it coming. I ate nachos from Taco Bell. I was craving them BAD and decided to try a little bit. I would have done fine if I'd have just eaten the beans, meat, cheese, etc without the chips. Man oh man was I miserable! I had the dry heaves for an hour straight and then I spent the rest of the night sitting on the toilet. I had the sweats and I thought my heart was gonna beat out of my chest. I won't do that again! But nausea was definitely part of the dumping process.
I was told before surgery that everybody is different and that what one person experiences with dumping another person might not and vice versa. It all depends on our own bodies how we dump.
I can promise you this though, I will NOT be eating anything that I think MIGHT POSSIBLY make me dump like that again! I NEVER want to experience that again, NOT EVER.
I hope this helps.
God bless you!

Hi Trish! We had surgery the same day.
Dumping symptoms can vary, especially the severity of nausea. I get very mildly nauseas but I feel like my heart is going to explode and I get faint and extremely tired, sweaty and cold. If I dump like that (no vomiting) I don't really find that my stomach needs a rest, but if I vomit (once since my second surgery, many times before the second surgery) I go ahead and go back to liquids/purees for the rest of the day and maybe another day, just to ease irritation in the pouch. Sometimes something hot really helps too, I usually have chamomile tea, mint tea, or hot milk with SF hot chocolate powder. Chicken broth would be the same idea. Hope you figure out what's bugging you soon.
If it continues, or gets worse make sure to see your doc because it might be a stricture. Best wishes!
I had my surgery on 8/27 and I don't think I've dumped until last nite. I had bought these Special K protein bars, but when I got home I realized they had quite a bit of sugar. They've been sitting in my pantry for weeks. For some stupid reason, I decided to try one last nite. What a mistake! Although it tasted delicious (it was peanut butter flavor), almost instantly I began to not feel right. I got so unbelievably tired to the point I could barely lift my arms and I also felt quite dizzy and queasy. I won't be eating those again! On the positive side, I was one of those people who hoped that I dumped because I don't really want to be able to eat sugar again. I know this may sound crazy, but I was a bit excited that a simple protein bar got me sick.
