I hate comparing myself to others and I get frustrated too. I have one friend who had surgery 2 weeks ahead of me and is down 20 more pounds and a coworker that had hers a month after me and is already at my current loss. I know they have had problems so I guess I would rather lose it slowly then to have problems. Congrats on the 40lbs.

Topic: RE: 3 mths out...but still have issues
I am new to the Board, having had surgery on 08/01/06, but felt compelled to respond. Are your "friends" - the ones calling you out - overweight themselves? If so, I think they may be threatened by the fact that you are going to be thin, and they aren't. And if they aren't, chances are you are still going to end up thinner than they are and you will no longer be their fat friend and they are still threatened by this. My family and friends have been supportive, so I am very lucky in that respect. Unless you have been in our situation, you don't understand why we had our surgeries (I had lap RNY) and you can't explain to someone who hasn't been there. You did what was best for you. You decided to make a PRO choice in your life and to take control back for your health. Don't let people who don't understand make you ever second guess your decision. If you have to make new friends, then be prepared to do that. You have to look out for yourself. Take care and good luck. - Kim

Well you know this is a personal decision but I was totally opposite.....EVERYONE around me knows....I dont mind even telling people I run into. Im so thankful for this gift that I want people to know and understand what its REALLY like, not what they think they know about it. I am an HR Manager and ALL of my 284 employees know...they are all supportive and cheer me on daily....I only ran across a few who didnt agree that I needed this so I quickly stopped their comments and gave them my handbook I created , so that they could educate themselves. One close friend was dead set against it...said I wasnt heavy enough..easy way out...yada yada yada....well after she got educated she changed her mind quick! People laugh about one grape will fill her up...etc...but I laugh and enjoy it... Im thankful and dont care who knows my business...mind you Im not a really private person anyway.... But all of my family told all of their friends and so on...so they all are watching me like a lab rat as you said...but a supportive team surrounding you is awesome. My sister had a party this past weekend in Atlanta and all of her friends were there...well my other sister kept making me model for them and sayin look at her butt, its almost gone! I was embarressed but excited to have people to share it with. My family emails calls and checks constantly on if I have had my protein or not...they are like hall monitors...but I wouldnt take anything in the world for being able to share this journey with them. When I see someone I havent seen these past 9 weeks they KNOW I have to have done something, so I immediately tell them and follow it with Im down to one blood pressure pill a day and no longer on any meds....THAT was my goal! But....with everyone knowing I do feel Im on display...not in a bad way...but they watch what I wear every day and I actually dont have anything to wear right now so that gets old...but I do feel like I need to be presentable at all times in case someone runs into me...lol...oh well I needed to care more about my appearance anyway! Good Luck to you...and speak up only in YOUR time.

Same here....slow loser....surgery 8/28 and have only lost 31 pounds and the scale bounces back up daily... I have gone 4 weeks with NO LOSS then last week it finally dropped back down to what it was at 4 weeks out....then this morning its back up a few pounds. I know I dont eat enough or drink enough.....they say that really matters... But I was told I would be a slow loser its just hard to accept. My highest was 248 and Im 195 (I guess) so I will take that..... I lost 20 before surgery and feel like I have to count that when telling people what I have lost cause they expect me to loose more than 31 pounds since surgery. Lets be strong ladies.........at least inches are dropping...Im wearing 16's and was in a 22! I thank God for that! So what all are you guys eating? Im 9 weeks out this week

I've been hooked on wheat thins. They are really small and I'm sure the serving size is around 15 crackers. But at 140 calories and 21 carbs, I just can't afford to keep eating them. I have 6-7 for a snack and then later on, I'll have the other serving. Those are the only things that I eat that I probably shouldn't. I haven't even been tempted with sweets.

I had my surgery on 8/1/06, and I am down 74 pounds so far. BUT - a lot of solid food seems to bother me - either it doesn't taste good or it gets stuck. Most of what I eat is soup or flaky fish. I am not eating vegetables yet - I've tried a few and had negative results. I am drinking my protein shakes and working on the water. I joined a gym, and was going often until the kids got into their full back to school schedule - now it's just hard for me to get there (I also have a one year old at home). As a result, I've had a huge slowdown - I actually went close to 3 weeks stuck at one weight, and then have lost about 10 since I started seeing the scale move again. We all have different roads to travel - don't worry about not being at the same point as someone else. You're doing awesome!!

I'm too afraid to try also. I'm tempted, but the thought of dumping is keeping me on the straight and narrow. I just took out a little candy for the kids from their trick or treat bags. All the pretzels and chips they got have gone in the bucket of school lunch snacks. Everything else is going to school tomorrow, as they are collecting candy for the soup kitchen. It's gotta get outta here!

Topic: RE: So, who have you told?
I started out exactly the way you did. I was going to tell everyone it was gall bladder. Then when I got to surgery, they left my g. bladder in! So I had a decision to make, to lie or to tell the truth. I decided to tell the truth. I have not had one person say anything negative (at least to my face). I decided that if it wasn't anyone else's business and if they didn't like it, too bad. It's my health, not theirs. I have't told that many people because no one has really asked yet but I'm sure it will come up. I have told all the people I'm closest to or work closest with. Everyone has been very supportive and caring. It's been a great experience for me both weight-wise and support-wise. If I had it to do again, I'd elect to tell. It's just too hard to keep a secret for the rest of my life. Hope this helps. Carol
