What's your typical daily menu?
I am 6 mos. out//have gone from 222 to 155 since last August. But all of a sudden I have terrible gas pain and flatulence that is embarrassing. I am literally afraid to eat. I had to take antibiotics a couple of weeks ago and it started then with diahrrea and now just the awful gas. It keeps me up at night and I am hungry but don't want to suffer so I'm not eating enough.
I am wondering what your typical day is like. All of a sudden I am confused about exactly what to try to make sure I'm getting enough protein etc. Protein drinks make me nearly explode with gas. Meat seems to do the same.
Please let me know what you're eating successfully.
Thanks.
To start with, please contact your doctor about this... It may be something they can help with. Maybe try something OTC like GasX? I know my surgeon told us to bring GasX to the hospital with us for gas postop...
As for an average day's menu, mine is usually something like this:
breakfast: egg beaters with cheese and some chopped green pepper or some bacon and some cantalope
snack (only on days when protein from breakfast is less than 20 grams): low fat/low sugar yogurt
lunch: usually something leftover from dinner the last few days...yesterday was leftover beef roast, sometimes I pull that leftover meat apart and put it in some broth and add some leftover veggies for a homeade soup
afternoon snack (only when I'm at less than 40 grams of protein by this point): same yogurt or some cheese--most days I don't eat a snack at all, but I never eat TWO snacks...they are just stuck in here where they may or may not apply
dinner: We've been pretty creative this last 3 mos as far as dinner is concerned... We've tried probably 50 new recipes in 3 mos time. Last night, I browned ground chicken and added a jarred spaghetti sauce. My daughter had this over soy pasta. For me, I put a cooking spoon full of the meat/sauce mix in the bottom of a microwave safe bowl. On top of this, I layered on some ricotta cheese and then some shredded italian blend cheese and shook on some parmesan cheese. Then, I microwaved this till the cheese was all gooey and hot. It was yummy! Occasionally I'll eat a bite or two of the pasta when we do something resembling spaghetti, but I don't enjoy pasta anymore, so not really an issue. We love beef in this household and it is an excellent protein source, so we do lots with beef. We do beef and peppers in the crockpot, a lot of stew type dishes with good veggies in them... We do meatloaf using good, lean ground chuck and the last one I made I stirred in some shredded cheddar cheese. Terryaki beef, chili, beef roast, steak, etc. We also eat a LOT of boneless/skinless chicken breast--baked, broiled, stir fried, etc. My local grocer sells a 3 pound bag of the IQF boneless skinless breasts for $5 quite often and I buy 4 or 5 bags and throw them in the deep freezer. Great bargain! I cook some extra each time and can have it chopped over some salad greens or made into soup for lunch another day.
MOST days, I try for 20 grams of protein from breakfast, 20-30 from lunch, and 20-30 from dinner. I try to NEVER get less than 65 in a day and actually aim for 80 per day according to my Nut.
As for fluids, I only count the clear liquids I drink... I don't count milk or anything I put into soup or a very occasional protein drink.
Here's a typical daily menu for me
B- 1 slice of brownberry bread/toast with a little butter and s.f. jam (this bread has only 6 net carbs and 5 g protein)
Small piece of fruit
S- New whey liquid protein (25 g protein)
L- chicken or fish (between 3 and 5 ounces) sometimes I can eat a little bit of cucumber salad or a piece of fruit if I didn't have any for breakfast
S- carb control yogurt or a protein bar, sometimes I'll have another New whey liquid protein vial
D- usually chicken or fish and a salad or some greens, sometimes I'll eat some steamed veges
S- If I have enough room I'll eat some beef jerky, or the other half of my protein bar.
I try to get in my 64 ounces of fluids and take all my vitamins. I'd say I meet this goal 5 out of 7 days.
Hi Jo it is really hard to find a good balance with the carbs for me. I struggle with that everyday. See if I do under 20 grams of carbs for a little while maybe for about a week I lose. If I do any longer than that I stall. If I don't eat enough carbs I stall. It's either all or nothing for me.
The New whey liquid protein can be found at www.bariatriceating.com and www.nashuanutrition.com
It is a vial of liquid protein that tastes kind of like a really sweet jello shot. The vial is only 2.9 ounces. Real easy to get the protein in! You can buy it in two ways. 25grams of protein and 42 grams of protein I believe. A lot of people on here say that we cannot absorb more than 30 grams of protein at a time. (my surgeon said that hasn't ever really been proven) But to be on the safe side, when I buy the 42 gram vial I drink half at a time.
It's pretty sweet, but not gritty and thick like chalk. You can put it in some crystal light, I think that would probably help. They are a bit pricey. You get 12 vials for about $25-$30.. But if you order from Nashua Nutrition all orders over $99 have free shipping. I've tried a few things from nashua nutrition like their protein hot chocolate and their protein soup. I thought they were really good!
Good luck!
thanks for this post....
your weight loss is great....mine is and has been stalled basically since November
I KNOW I probably snack on too many carbs...or dont eat enough every day...
I have gone from 228 to 170...and that darn scale just bounces up then back down
I did see 169 ONCE then it was gone....
I promised to be perfect with all of this and I find all hard...I cant stomach many things well...
Steak and lobster are my favs...I can even eat it reheated so I pretty much survive on it most days...
I do tend to snack on lite chips and such which I know is bad but cheez-its get me thru sometimes...oh and most days I dont feel like fixing things I turn to grits w/ cheese or Special K Protein Plus.....I eat both of those things often.
most days
B - Special K Protein Plus w/ 1% milk
S - some type of bar or fruit
L - usually subway salads or kids meal sandwich (takes 2 hours to eat but protein count is good)
S - nuts or bar, occasional carb related light snack
D - a piece of steak or fish with a few bites of veggies
S - protein drink if my count has been low for the day
i know Im getting way too many carbs...you guys sound like you are doing so well...please pray for me...
Im sure that is why my scale doesnt move....of course when I dont eat them it goes up....so I dunno how to find that perfect balance.
i try to get creative with dinner sometimes but i run out of ideas. HELP!

Isn't it something when you don't eat and you gain weight??? OMG just stop! I have stopped weighing except on Monday mornings. That is my only time I go near the scales.
I am learning that if I eat too little, I will stop losing all together. If I eat too many carbs I will not lose and may even put on a lb or 2. Too little carbs and no lose either. Go figure!
I have learned that the liquid is a key role. If I am not drinking, it doesn't matter whether I eat or not, NOTHING is happening.
Problem is that I can either get the protein in or the liquid, not usually both in the same day.
