Snacking
Hi Andrea...
Great job on your weight loss ...........
I do get the urge sometimes to snack. My Dr. actually said that the orville redenbacher smart pop is a great snack with only 100 cal's. He also said it will help you to stay regular (in the bathroom area)... It's a huge serving in that bag & is really satisfying. I also keep sf pudding, yogurt, and mozzerella cheese sticks on hand. The cheese sticks are awesome because they give you a good source of protein in 1 stick. I usually try to drink about 20 oz first if I feel the urge to snack. Then wait the 30 minutes. Alot of time the urge is gone. If not. I choose a healthy snack. This will usually only happen once during the day & doesn't happen every day.
Good luck & keep up the great work

Hi Tammy,
I read your post, and you gave some great advice. However, I just wanted to caution everyone on popcorn. At 4 1/2 months out, I too was snacking on popcorn. I was never able to eat a whole bag though. Anyway, I ended up in the hospital with a partial bowel obstruction. My surgeon said that even though popcorn is fiber, it was too much too soon. He said I shouldn't be eating popcorn until at least a year out and he thinks it's the popcorn that caused the obstruction (I'll never touch it again, btw! It was not worth it! That tube up the nose hurts). I know everyone is different, and I'm not trying to be a fearmonger by any means, just trying to let everyone know what my experience was. And I had never had a problem with constipation, so it's not like that was a precursor or anything. Also, that's the only complication of any kind that I've had. So I'm inclined to think it was something I ate (the popcorn) as opposed to scar tissue, etc. Just wanted to throw that out there, take from it what you will... BTW Andrea, great job on your loss so far! You're doing awesome!
Shelley,
Thanks for letting me know. I can't eat the whole bag either. I think there's like 5 or 6 cups in one of those bags. I see my surgeon again this Wednesday, I'll talk to him about it. Seems like popcorn does the opposite for me though. If I haven't gone in a few days & I have popcorn, it helps me out. Don't you wish there was an individual owners manual that came along with this???
Shelley,
I think you bring very valueble practical point. We do have to be careful with what and how we eat. I know that my surgeon doesn't recommend Popcorn 'til atleast 6 mo. and then it's something to be cautious with not due to caloric or nutrition content, but rather it's potential to cause problems such as bowel obstruction.

I have always wanted to snack since I've has surgery. Sometimes I try drinking and sometimes it helps - other times it doesn't. Unfortunately, most of the time, I give in to my urges and do it anway, which is bad bad bad! But, I do try to eat healthy snack such as yogurt or cheese sticks. But I do have a problem with those evil carbs! Anyway, try drinking something first, then just see what happens. Good luck and congratulations on your weight loss!

I've read about a lot of people in here who eat popcorn and have had no problems.
I have been having issues with constipation (have actually suffered from it most of my life but it had gotten better -actually- after WLS) during the last 1-1/2 months. Have tried numerous things: teas, stool softeners, laxatives, supositories, fiber tablets, fiber candy, SF candy, strawberries, peaches, oranges, metamucil, and most haven't help much. So, I called my surgeon last week and asked if it would be okay for me to try popcorn. He said, ABSOLUTELY NOT! There's is a chance that being almost 6 months out it may not cause any trouble; but, there is a high chance it may still cause and obstruction...THEREFORE, knowing I do not want to go through having to get a tube down my troat to solve such a problem, I decided to listen to my surgeon, once again. I'll stay clear of popcorn until he okays it.
Just thought I'd share this with you.
Good luck!

Hi Andrea.
Congrats on the weight loss!! I hit the snaking stage ages ago! I start with upping water intake. That usually takes care of it. But... if I'm really dying for something I usually cave - but the good news is.. usually one bite is enough. Snacking is a major no-no for my surgeon, but hey, we're still human.
Be conscious of it and if all else fails, try to limit the snack to once in a while, not all day.
