Safe for hair color if losing hair due to surgery?

Has anybody braved the hair salon yet for highlights or hair color since they started losing so much hair? My highlights really need some love and I hate the current look of my 5 inch regrowth. I am thinking about hitting up my hardresser to have my highlights updated, but I afraid I will end up compltely bald! Any advice? I use the Nioxin product line and I am losing a indecent amout of hair each day. I try not to focus on it because it is so depressing. I can't wait for the loss to stop, but it seems out of my control.

I'm still losing hair too. Not quite as bad as it was for a while, but still steady. I've colored my hair every 4 to 6 weeks for years, and have continued to do so since surgery. It hasn't affected the loss. Go get those highlights and enjoy!

I had highlights last week. It hasn't made me go bald yet. My hair is still falling out though. My hairdresser said it was ok. She said that she has done several WLS patients.

Thank you both for your replies...I'm going to call her as soon as she opens! Heck, if I'm gonna go bald, I might as well be stylish in the process, right? Thanks again!

My hair dresser told me "no way", but everyone else has done it and not gone bald, so I'm gonna make her do mine! My highlights are looking a little rough now, and I don't like my hair getting so dark. I too have tried Nioxin and Biotin, and it seems like neither has helped, so I've just accepted the hair loss and think of it as a small price to pay for 108 pounds lost. Happy dying!

I get mine done every 6 weeks and I am still losing hair. I also noticed I have new hair growth so I dont think I will go bald. Diana 263/189/135

I have a great hairdresser who said okay to highlights since they don't actually touch your scalp (that little piece of board they use keeps it 1/8 inch off the scalp) and no to dye since it goes directly on your scalp. The color of the highlights actually adds thickness to your hair. Good luck!

YES!! My hair was past my shoulders, and a week after surgery I cut like 4 inches, because my stylist said the anesthesia affects the hair.. and I've always colored it every month, even did the highlights back in October, but I wasn't crazy about it. So my hair was late in falling out and for awhile I was picking up 2x as much hair and had not been to the salon. When my stylist saw me last week - I told her about the fall out- so we trimmed my hair- and super conditioned it- and colored it- and it felt so silky soft- I couldnt believe it! So now it doesn't come out as much as it did- hard for me to believe! So I say go for it- your hair will respond to the nourishment. Hugs, Donna

I color mine every four weeks. I've now drastically colored it from blondish red to very dark brown now. Almost black. I like the dangerous look it gives me.. heehee. Anyway, at three months out I noticed more hair loss than normal when I did my wet combing after my shower. Here I am five 1/2 months out and still extra hair coming out after my shower. I take Andrew Lessman's HEALTHY HAIR SKIN AND NAILS. Been taking those supplements for many years and also eat red meat every other day, plus 52 grams of whey isolate protein shakes a day. I'm waiting for this extra hair loss to stop. I'm trying to get in my protein and only wash my hair every three days. Gina
