Flexible Spending Medical Accounts

Hi August Friends Just wanted to let anyone know that has a flexible spending medical account that you probably can use this account for vitamins, calcium and protein supplements. I contacted my flex spending representative and she told me that as long as I have a letter of medical necessity from either my pcp or my surgeons office which states that multi vitamins, calcium citrate and protein supplements are medically necessary, I can apply these to my flex spending account. For those that are not sure what this is, this is an account through your employer that is set up for unreimbursed medical or dental costs. The money is withheld from your pay prior to taxes, thus saving you alot of money. I elected to have $4500 placed in my flex spending this year for orthodontis, glasses, dental etc. Now I can use it also for my vitamins/supplements. Federal law allows certain over the counter products to be applied to flex spending like cold medicines etc, but vitamins are not on the list. This is why the letter is needed. At any rate, thought I'd let you know. If you have this type of account, call your representative, you should be able to use yours as well. Take Care Tammy

Hi Tammy, Thanks for that information. Mine renews in April and I will look into this as well. I wonder if we can write off the protein and vitamins on our taxes. Probably if we have documentation....Remember to consult your tax person... Diana 263/194/135
