Hi kristine,
I can also eat about a cup of food, I really haven't had any trouble except, food getting stuck from not chewing enough! I also haven't experienced "dumping" yet, thank goodness!! My nutrtionalist tells me that I can eat a cup to a cup and a half per meal. I haven't been able to eat more than one cup, by then I'm full! I'm almost 3 months out, I had RNY on 8/31/05. I can eat pork chops, pasta (don't eat often cause it fills me up so fast), chicken, beef, haven't tried steak only because I'm still working on chewing, chewing, chewing!!! (I used to inhale my food I have to admit sugars haven't been a problem, but I haven't pushed my limits too far.

OMG... I am so relieved to see that others can eat more like normal. I had surgery on August 1st and 2nd and ate only liquids for about three weeks. Then I started to eat some normal food and within about 5 weeks I had already had bread, pasta, meat, everything except sugary stuff. I am getting worried because I can eat whatever I want. I can eat quite a bit too.. like some of you were saying.. up to a cup. If I am eating a salad, I can eat even more than a cup. I can probably eat 2 cups. I am worried about eating too much. I have never thrown up (made myself once cause I ate too much and was really uncomfortable..lol) and have never dumped. It almost feels like I am cheating and then I worry about not losing enough. I have lost 75lbs so far so I guess I am doing something right. It is nice to know others can eat more than they say we should.

Wow, everyone is so different. I just had 2 oz. of chicken, about 6 green beans (cut, so really about three whole ones) and half a biscuit...that was pushing it. I normally wouldn't have eaten the biscuit, but didn't eat much today, so I thought I should try. I can eat a pudding cup without any problem and I think those are 4oz or maybe 6oz. But I could never eat 6 oz of chicken. I had my surgery on 8/11/05. I've lost 85 pounds and my doctor wants me to try and get 1000 calories a day. It's hard! They are mildly concerned with my fast loss. I've just recently gotten to the point where I can eat a whole scrambled egg. I've been trying to focus on more dense proteins and for me, those are harder to eat. I really have to eat slowly and chew. If I do that, then I usually don't have too many problems.
I too eat only about 3-4 oz of "dense" proteins like chicken, steak, etc. However, mushy stuff like cottage cheese and even soft boiled eggs go down much easier and I can handle 1/2 to 1 cup of these. Also, the dietician at my surgeon's office said that lots of veggies have "lots" of water in them. Chewing them well releases the water and lets you actually put much more of them into your pouch. That is why you can get 1 or maybe even 2 cups of salad down if that is all you are eating.
I stay around 600-700 calories and have lost about 61 pounds so far. I don't really do protein shakes, only real foods. I also find that I need to stay up around 60-80 oz of water a day.
