Familiar with Reglan?

Hi gang, Has anyone here been put on Reglan? I'm having problems with foods getting stuck (no matter how small the bite or how many times it's chewed). One of the surgeons (not mine) at the hospital suggested I be put on Reglan when he heard me describe my symptoms at a recent support meeting. I discussed this with my primary and he very reluctantly gave me the script, which I haven't filled yet. His concern is that this med causes contractions in your stomach/small bowel and esophagus which allows the food to get through...but he said he can't imagine giving it to a gastric bypass patient because of the staples, etc. I need to figure this out becuase I'm so tired of vomitting every day. Once my food gets stuck, I can't eat or drin****il it comes up. which sometimes takes like 6 hours of nausea and pain! I know I should call my surgeon, but I'm wondering why his associate would recommend this drug and yet my family doc is leary. I have had 5 other abdominal surgeries (unrelated to the bypass), so I don't want any more complications than I've already had... any advice would be appreciated! ~toni~ 323/268/180??

I have a client at work that is on Reglan for intestinal problems. He is on a pureed diet for the rest of his life because of it. Like you said, it is supposed to increase contractions of the stomach and small intestine, which helps with passing the food through. I know how it feels when you're getting things stuck all the time, but mine is my own fault, but it's frustrating. If I were you, I'd call my surgeon before taking anything. Hope it works out and good luck!

I took it for a couple of weeks when I was breastfeeding my baby. It also stimulates the production of milk. Other than that I don't know much about it. I would call me surgeon ASAP.

I'm actually seeing my GI doc tomorrow. I was squeezed in as an emergency appt. becuase I'm now throwing up even when I drink. I didn't fill the Reglan script yet because I just don't feel comfortable taking it knowing some of the side effects. I'm really disappointed in my primary care doc because he seems very uncaring in my treatment since my surgery. I know I need to get a new doc and will ask for a referral from my surgeon asap. Clarissa...you mentioned that your food gets stuck through your own fault...what are you doing? I try to chew my food as thoroughly as I can, but I wonder if I'm putting too much in at once. I've been trying to troubleshoot this problem on my own but am getting frustrated. Perhaps I only THINK I'm doing everything right? I do catch myself swallowing after only a few bites at times and I know I'm in for a rough time until it gets through. Any words of wisdom on the art of eating?

My biggest problem has been eating too fast. I'm pretty good with chewing things now, but I did have to learn the hard way. If I drink when I eat that causes alot of pain sometimes too. But I would think that if you're getting sick even after you drink, it probably isn't something that you're doing yourself. Hope your appointment goes well and I think it was a wise decision to hold off on the Reglan. Things will get better.

I had my surgery in August and was on Reglan when I came home. All the pain medications and other drugs made me have nausea. I didn't have a problem with it, and it didn't affect my staples. I had open Rny. It didn't work as well as Phenergan as for helping with the nausea. Teri

Toni- I was on reglan for about a month- and I trust that my surgeon wouldnt have given me this- if it wasnt safe. It helped me get my food down somewhat- It did give my headaches, and I eventually had to be scoped due to haveing a stricture. Call your Dr... you may need a scope! IMO reglan is all good!

Hey Michelle, I just saw my GI doc and he wants to scope me again. I was scoped at 5 weeks post-op due to pain when I ate or drank. Back then I wasn't vomitting and he didn't see a stricture or anything else suspicious. But now that I am vomiiting, he feels it's time to take another peek. If this scope proves negative then he will go ahead with the Reglan. I've learned that some folks have a difficult time with food for up to a year! So, right now, I'm back on puree... I've also hit a plateau; I'm not too concerned right now because I know my caloric intake ha**** an all-time low and my body's probably in starvation mode. Plus, I have been slacking with the water and protien...add it all up and it equals 'plateau'. I joined a gym two weeks ago but have only been doing the cardio stuff for now (treadmill and bike****il I can get this under control, just don't feel up to much exercise. I'll keep everyone posted... ~Toni~ 323/267/???
