I was told in the hospital to not drink with a straw to avoid air in the tummy. Is that forever, or just temporary? I have sensitive teeth and would love to drink through a straw again! Anyone have any experience with this?

Hija, I was told the same thing, and at my last nutrionist meeting I was told that again... which for me, meant for the rest of my life. You could ask your doctor since you have the teeth issue. Dawn

HEY BECKY!!!! My I was told in one of my pre op classes that we are never to use a straw because it fills our pouch with air and can make us nauseous or vomit, but like Dawn advised, I would advise the same, it seem like we all have different meal plans and instructions from our docs. I was told about the air thing too. I got on here and read what others say about using straws and decided a couple of weeks ago to try it and haven't had any problem with it. I agree with listening to your doctor, however it seems so many say such different things that you have to decide what works for you and what doesn't. Gianna

Yeah I was told about the air in the pouch too. I was told not to ever use a straw again, but I do it every once in a while to prevent gulping (something I have an issue with). So far, when I have used straws, they haven't bothered me, but I try to avoid them as much as possible.

I was told the same thing by my Dr., but I forget everytime I go out to dinner and end up drinking my water through the straw with no problems. I used to love drinking with straws, but now I just do it when I go out. -Lynn Lap RNY 8-16-05 297/253/140

No one ever told me about straws, so I have been using them here and there - especially when we go out for iced tea, etc. I have done fine with them. Laura

Uh... I was told not to drink with a straw but guess what? I can't stand my protiene drinks touching my lips and leaving them "chalky" so I've been using a straw since day one lol. Never had any issues. Only issue I have is when I don't use one and that protiene shake glues chalky stuff on my lips and I gag lol. Also, I used to be a really bad "gulper" and did "gulp" a few times and OUCH... using a straw prevents me from gulping.

I only drink with straws to control my intake of water. The book we got from my doctor says if you have problem with gas it might be caused by drinking with a straw but on a different page it says to drink through a straw if you are having problems taking too big of a gulp. Go figure I hope this helps.
