Eating Salads and fresh but cooked veggies

Does anyone know when we can safely eat salads again and fresh cooked veggies like Brocolli and cabbage. When I was in for my 1 month post op visit my Dr (not the surgeon, but one of his staff Dr's) said I had to wait 6 mos post op to eat a salad. Now, this seems a bit extreme and that particular day I thinkshe was a bit out of it, they did not even weight me for that visit and she looked so tired and her wig was on crooked - looked like she had already ahd a rough day and it was only 2pm! I know we were not suppose to eat Brocoli and cabbage due to the gas is causes stretching the stomach. What do your Dr.'s say about this? I am craving a salad and some fresh veggies, I think can veggies are like eating paper and have about that much nutritional value. Judye

My doctors office said that I could eat cooked vegetables as of my 5th week and could have a salad of lettuce by the 6th week. I have not tried a salad yet but it sure sounds yummy. I have actually ate cooked brocoli without a problem.

Thanks Karen, I think I will give the salad and brocoli a try, my liver enzymes are elevated and are usually perfect and I am wondering if this is due to too many carbs, although I am not eating much of anything really. je

My doctor okayed salads and veggies at my 6 week check up; all I have to avoid is the potatoes/carrots kind of veggies.

My doctor said I could eat anything but stay away from Bread, Pasta, Rice. Eat protein first and I could have salads after week 4. I have had them in small amounts. I might have some chicken and then 3-4 bites of salad. Diana

Thanks Diana, I think after reading the responses I will give lettuce a little longer but look forward to other cooked veggies I have not tried. I have been eating tomatoes, baked potatoes (only a small amount of course) and avocadoes with no problems but the later of the three have alot carbs and fat. I still do better with blended meats. je

Thanks so much for the info, I really thought I should be able to have more green veggies by now, I need to cut out the baked potatoes. je

Just a word of warning on broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. I had broccoli about 6 weeks out and had the most horrible gas. I had pain in my chest and burped all evening. A friend had the same problem. I'd love the baby field green salad with carmelized pecans from Luby's but I don't think I can have that for a very long time. I can't wait to have a salad though. Well I had a tiny piece of cooked broccoli tonight and it did not sit so well so I guess I will have to wait on that awhile longer too. My diet seems so limited I just do not see how I can get enough nutrition. Only 7 weeks out now so I am assured this will improve. je

I had a part of a Grilled Chicken Ceasar's Salad last weekend and it was wanderful. I had no problems with it.
