1st bad episode at 6 weeks...I believe it was a form of dumping

I had my first episode of dumping on Friday. I bought this book online it was a recipe book for bariatric surgery eating, it's called Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery. It has wonderful recipes and even has a little diagram at the bottom that shows you how much to eat depending on your type of surgery and how far out you are. Well I made this Salmon with creamy lime dill sauce. IT WaS AWESOME for about three bites and then I don't know what happened. I got that stuck feeling and I felt like I was going to throw up and I did and then I kept throwing up this clear gel. I felt horrible. And the worst part is, I don't know what I did wrong. I didn't puree it, because I was afraid of eating a bone, so I just took little bites and chewed real well. It has no added sugar at all. I had only ate like three bites, I believe I had waited at least 30 minutes from drinking, but I stopped drinking way before I started preparing it. So, I have no idea what happened. All I know is it was AWFUL and I felt like crap for about 1.5 hours and finally, I threw up a chunk of something and then I was fine, perfectly fine like nothing happened. I had chili the next day and I was fine. So, I don't know if it had to do with the amount of lime juice or the dijon mustard, but I will try it again in a few months. It was good. Has anyone else experienced this. I haven't had any problems except a few times I get that stuck feeling. I am praying that I don't have restriction or blockage, although I did go into this with a hiatal hernia. So, I see my doc on Friday and perhaps he can shed some light on this.

Hi Apryl, The chunk you threw up and then felt great makes it sound that you missed chewing at least one piece of salmon and it got stuck. Since you were able to get down chili I wouldn't think you had a stricture developing, though, since I'm not a nurse or doctor I could obviously be wrong. What was the base of the sauce? Maybe too much fat for you to take? I'm glad all seems well today. Dawn

It felt like a piece of something. But, I had only had three little bites, The base was dijon mustard, lime juice, and dill, so I am thinking that lime juice was the culprit. I do have a hiatal hernia which causes reflex and I did not take my prevacid that day...But thanks for the reply. I ate chicken tonite and I am making sure it is pureed and I am chewing to a liquid....that was an awful experience.

I know exactly what you experienced. Ahh! I had tuna one night, totally fine. A few days later, tuna again, and sick as a dog. Tonight, I made baked chicken with no added oil, butter, etc. Ate just a few bites. Sick as a dog. Also, I think lime gives me a problem because I get queasy after drinking SF lemonade or limeade. It may just be too acidic. I'm sure what you experienced is just dumping, but talk to your doctor. I see mine this Thursday. Jackie B

I see my doctor on Friday, so I am going to mention it. I ate a lot of tuna at the beginning, but I started feeling gross the last couple times, so I just stay away now. I do take a prevacid and papaya enzyme before I eat meat and that really helps...

Hija, By the way.. congrats on the 30lbs! I'm very aware of how bad you must have felt. The end of week 2 I had a blockage that the RN & I think was a piece of processed lunch meat (which is why I now only buy the expensive stuff) that put me through 6 hours of the worse pain I've ever had in my life... even beat the kidney stone I had. It took 2 hours after I ate before it hit. Dry heaves cleared it. Then about 2 weeks ago I ate about 3 bites of chili and ended up bringing it up. Never a good thing, but it sure is nice how much better you instanty feel. Dawn

Apryl, I had surgery the day before you and have had three throwing up episodes. One I know what I did wrong but the other two are a mystery. I called and talked with my surgeon's nurse and she said it is common at week 5 or 6 to begin to feel better and eat/drink too fast so I have slowed down and am doing better. Another thing that I have been experiencing is a lot of acid so have been using pepcid and that has helped. It can get really confusing-eat something one time and it goes okay then the next time trouble. I just try to remember that my stomach is still healing so I guess it can be a little crabby at times. Hope things go better, Lynne

Lynne, I have also been eating EXTRA slow. I still use a baby spoon and I still puree food. My doctor has us on pureed until week 8, but in my opinion it just makes chewing easier...I read your profile and you are doing EXCELLENT, was an awesome amount of weight to lose. Today was the 1st day I haven't weighed myself. It is like an addition, but I am going to TRY and only weigh myself once a week...We will see how that goes...But congrats on your success so far. I can't wait to see our pictures next year....You need to post some before pics...
