Protein supp. BLUES!!!!!!!
Hello everyone! I'm sure this question has come up before, but, please bear with me! I am 4 wks. post op and Iam becoming discouraged!!! I have lost 29 lbs. and I am very happy with that,BUT, I cannot stand the Protein shakes!! I hate the smell, consistency( I'm not lactose intolerant),ETC!! I've had a rough time with the pureed stage (I've only just started soft foods), and I know I have to supplement so I can get enough protein. So, PLEASE help a girl out and give me some suggestions on some goooood protein supplements???? Also, I would appreciate some great suggestions for the soft food phase. Thanks so much in advance !!!!
First of all, congrats on the 29 pounds!!!! That's awesome. I am just starting my 6th week post-op. There are a couple of ways I've found to get my protein shakes in. One is a place called Smoothie King. They have a smoothie called Gladiator. It has 45 grams of protein no matter what size of cup you get. You can choose 2 different (or the same) fruit/fruit juices. It's pretty good. If you like sweet and tart, try the raspberry/lemon combination. I love them!!! I've also tried different things with my protein powder. Like one way I tried it was to add pineapple juice, cottage cheese, lite cool whip and protein powder. Blend it all up and it's pretty good. I go really heavy on the pineapple juice because I like the flavor and it knocks out more of the protein powder flavor.
Also, pinto beans are great for protein. Taco Bell/Bueno are great with their refried beans. The portion size is great and you can have cheese on it as well to add a little extra protein.
Hope some of that helps. Hang in there....you're doing great!!!
Have a great day!!

RaeAnn,
Thanks soooo much for your sugestions, I was under the impression that we couldn't tolerate the smoothies because of the fruit juice(it doesn't make you dump?). There is a place near me called Orange Julius, I'll have to see if they have a high protein supplement. Also , I love pineapple too, I'll have to try some of your suggestions.....thanks so much!!!!
Hi, I also hate the protein shakes and can't get them down. I was turned on to one called Juice Plus and it is not so bad and you mix it with Milk. I am waiting for it to come. I bought mine on ebay cause I just wanted a few cans. I don't plan to be on it forever. I am starting my fifth week and I have not really been doing much protein. I think I can tolerate this one.

NOW FOR MY RESPONSE TO THAT
When I first went to Smoothie King, I told them I had just had the surgery and that I could not have any sugar but needed something with a lot of protein. They suggested a smoothie called 'The Gladiator' and I can pick whatever fruit I want. They told me that their strawberries had some sugar on them, but they could rinse them for me. Other than that, none of their fruits had sugar added to them. It hasn't made me dump....BUT...this one time....they had a sale where you could buy a 32 oz and get a 20 oz free. Well, I'm such a bargain hunter (cheap), I thought I'd just take that deal and sip on the drinks throughout the day. Well, let me tell you 52 oz of fruity-fruit-fruit drink is a little much in a day. However, when I just do either a 20 oz OR a 32 oz, I have no problem. When I make my own at home, I make sure the juice I buy is 100% juice and that the fruit I add is packed in it's own juice or fresh. Sorry for the long ramble-thon. Anyhoo, if you try Orange Julius, just make sure to tell them you can't have sugar but need something with a lot of protein. The worst they can say is 'no'.
Have a great day!!!

RaeAnn,
YOU MEAN TO TELL ME I CAN MAKE MY OWN SMOOTHIES AT HOME WITH FRESH FRUIT AND JUST ADD MY PROTEIN POWDER AND 100% JUICE????? You don't know how excited I REALLY am !!!! I am on my way to the grocery store and I am going to make some smoothies!!!!!
Thank you soooo much !!! I'll let ya know how it went!!!! TOOTLES!!
I too am tired of the shakes. I've started eating the stallone protien pudding; 20gms. Not great, but not bad. I tried the Nectar, but it's too too sweet. Of course I bought way too much of it because I couldn't decide what flavor I wanted. I may try it again at some point.
Thanks for mentioning the smoothie king. I'll have to stop by. Could use something fun.
