New to board - Exercise question?

Hi, I just discovered this bulletin board and am enjoying reading posts from others who had surgery in August 2005. I had surgery August 25th, so today is one month for me. Overall I have had no problems and am happy I made this decision. I have lost 39 lbs from my highest weight in June, but have stalled this past week. How much exercise were you doing at one-month post op? I have been walking twice a day since the day after surgery and recently moved up to 2 miles per day. It takes me 25-30 minutes to walk a mile, so I am not exactly power walking...but I do feel it has helped increase my overall energy. What other forms of exercise do you do? My surgeon said to hold off on any weight bearing exercise until 6 weeks post-op. I toured the local YMCA the other day and plan on joining sometime soon. (It is pretty tough to walk outdoors in Minnesota come winter!) Thanks, Jill 308/269/170ish?

Jill, just keep walking... Try and go a little further each day. My doctor told me I could use my elliptical machine 1 month post; however, it is entirely up to your doctor and where you are. I was fairly active before my surgery, so this wasn't a new exercise for me. He also told me I would have to wait 8 weeks before using weights. I had an open RNY, so I don't know if it is different for lap procedures. Always call and ask your doctor, they are all different, but they know what works for their patients. Apryl

I walk about an hour a day. I scaled back for a while due to the surgery. I am planning on going back to water aerobics once my doctor clears me. I cant wait. I figure as long as you are moving your body you are doing well.
