How do you get your Protein
I know that many of us are on different stages - I was just wondering how much everyone has to get and how much everyone is ACTUALLY getting???? Oh and tell us how and what you are eating!
I'll start:
I have tried many shakes and nothing is working - I liked Unjury the best - just realized that the over the moon milk actually has more protein. I have been making some turkey burgers and meatballs - my suggested amount of protein is 50-60 and I am averaging (when not sick) 30-45.
Juli
Juli,
I was told by the dietician to try to get in approx 60 grams of protein daily. I actually get about 45-50 in now. Because it's only been three weeks, I am still on soft/blenderized food. I get in one or two protein drinks daily (that's about 30-40 grams of protein right there). I also stick to softer foods that are higher in protein (cottage cheese, yogurt, etc) and find that I can put some protein powder in those foods too, which gets me pretty near my goal of 60. If you can't tolerate the drinks, try ordering single servings/trial samples from various sources. I find that the drinks I liked pre-surjury are awful post-surgery (sickingly sweet). Most samples only cost $1-3.00 each and I found it much cheaper than buying a $30.00 tub. Eventually we will get almost all of our protein from the solid food we eat, but for now, just experiment with different things. Good luck,
Samantha
Oh my God no! Ever since I woke up from surgery, I have been unable to find anything sweet palatable! Believe it or not, I used to LOVE JELLO! Now I can't look at the stuff. I haven't had a bite of it since my surgery. I don't know if it's because almost everything we can eat the first few days is sweet (popsicles, putting, etc), or if it's just hormones. I know that I had had my first dumping episode one week out, and that was on pain medication that was in a liquid form (turns out there is some sugar in that stuff!). It could be all these things combined, but nonetheless, I can't stand sweets anymore! Just the thought makes me gag. Glad to know I'm not the only one.
Thanks,
Samantha
Hi Juli! I had my surgery around the same time as you, and it took me a couple weeks to get used to the protein thing myself. I'm finally able to get in about 60g a day, between drinking AchievOne protein latte drinks (taste just like Starbucks frappucinos, thank goodness!) which are 20g, Snack & Slim protein puddings which are 20g, and one of my sample packets of protein powders (everything I ordered from bariatriceating.com) for another 20g to 27g. I find that with a combination of those foods, I'm able to down them a lot better. Right now, my fav protein powder is Zero Carb Isopure in Creamy Vanilla, which has 50g in 2 scoops.
That, and the vitamin thing, which I'm taking a liquid multi-vitamin, liquid calcium, Biotin capsule...still waiting for my chewable iron pills to come in.
Since I'm still in my first month post-op, I'm still doing the modified liquid diet thing, with soup, oatmeal, pudding, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, etc., so I'm not yet doing the solid foods yet. Next Friday, I go to my doctor for the new diet! Hopefully with the addition of fish and meat, I'll get in some more much needed protein.
The problem I'm having is getting my water in. Before surgery, I would drink it all day long! Now, I can hardly get in one bottle. Very hard to just sip it all day as opposed to drinking it in big gulps like I used to!
Best of luck to you!
Take care!
Wendy
Hi Juli
For protein I have varied my testing, I also find things sweet- usually when there is too much splenda used- but here is what I have tried:
Nectar Brand:
Carribbean Cooler - tastes like a pina colada -add some pineapple juice
Fuzzy Navel - Tangerine/Orange -mix with Crystal Light sunrise- tastes
Orangina - or mix with Crystal LIght Strawberry/Tangerine.
Iced Tea - This tastes like a southern iced tea with mint julep- not what I expected- thought it would be like crystal light- so have this cold.
Isopure Dutch Chocoloate- Not a big chocolate fan- tried this on another's recommendation- tastes ok- but tried with reg milk- & may have had issues with milk- as Im lactose intolerant - Doh!
Designer Whey
Chocolate Peanut Caramel - This tastes great- and I mix it with lactaid milk and its great.
Vanilla Praline- I mix this with Cappucino flavored Soy Milk and this is a BLAST- like you were having a frappucino at Starbucks.
The Designer Whey is $19.95 and the cheapest - the Isopure is the most expensive at $32.00. I am in 3 support groups and many postops I know swear by the Designer Whey brand, having had no problems with it.
They all mix well without a blender- and you can do them with water or
milk. Next time I do the Carribean cooler I am going to use pineapple juice and throw in some pineapple bits. There is even coconut in the shake!
I am supposed to get 45-60gms daily- and usually get 50gms from 2 shakes a day.I am having trouble with fitting in #3.
Good luck and let me know how you make out!

Donna,
those are some great ideas for additions. You add the sunrise as powder or make an entire thing of it and add it from there? I didn't like the smell of the iced tea.
It sounds like you are doing great!
Where can I get the carribean cooker and designer whey? is that bariatric eating too? I will have to get samples of the choc peanut and the car cooler.
I know that my hubby is going to be ordering some stuff from there. Is that all you can eat or do you do other stuff too?
Juli
I'm almost three weeks out and doing OK getting my protien. The first couple of weeks I had one or two carb solution protien shakes, about 20g each. Yogurt, 6gs. I just got moved to soft foods and finding it much easier. I discovered these heart smart crab cakes as a treat. 17g of protien and only 140 calories, almost no carbs. 1.9 oz makes a meal.
I'm drinking the Netcar carribean cooler with crystal light. Tastes just like a pina colada. A little too sweet for me but not bad.

Hi Donna,
Are you finding all of these on Bariatric eating? You have really done your homework.. I'm so worried I am not getting enough protein in..I'm not even sure what I am supposed to be getting in...I don't remember if the nutritionist even brought that up...I will have to check...
Thanks!
